Guest guest
- she's completely normal. My non-rss son was put in time-out this week too. He told the teacher no too ! LOL Sorry for laughing - it wasn't funny at the time - I just get a kick out of our children being so bold. I wouldn't worry too much. The adjustment from summer to school can be difficult - new routines, new kids, new teachers - everything is new. (non-rss) has been exhausted. He used to go to bed at 8:30 and get up at 7:30. He's been going to bed at 7:00 pm and getting up at 6;30 am. He's all messed up - too much excitement in his life. Give it a couple more weeks and see how she does. By the way - the only reason I'm able to offer this advice is because another mom I know at my son's preschool gave me the exact advice because I was very concerned as well. Hope you feel better. Our best to Tori too. - H > Tori is having a hard time in school, she is not listing and tells her > teacher no. Guest guest
Hi I don't know how old Tori is (sorry!) but if she was in pre-k last year I am thinking 2-5 yrs of age. First of all, using both hands tends to be common in very young children. Her teacher " should " know this. It's usually around the age of 4-5 that one hand becomes dominant. Her teacher should just let her " do " what she feels is best. At home you can watch which hand she frequently uses to eat with, or to drink with, or to grab very desirable objects with and let the teacher know. As for saying NO. Well Adam was a pro at that. He was never rude, he was never doing that to be obstinate, Adam just had such a strong personality he thought HIS way was the right way and he wasn't going to do anything HE didn't want to do. He's still that way to a certain point, but it has mellowed with my harping over the years. I had Adam on a double blind trial of Ritalin when he was 7 and it made no difference. He's not ADHD but some doctors (who love to diagnosis everyone and their mother as ADHD) said he was. But the medication didn't make a difference. He's just strong willed and people have to learn to work around it. Don't rush to get the doctor's appt. moved up. I am a teacher as well. I know as a parent we feel bad when the teacher is having a hard time, but you know what? They are paid good money and can mange to wait a few weeks until you go in. Out of curiosity ask the teacher how many other kids in the class are acting this way as well or how many other moms are getting the same " talk " . Sometimes it is the group of kids, and you do feel better once you find out it isn't only Tori acting this way. Teachers don't like to compare kids or talk of one kid in particular but if you just asked if she has had a similar discussion with any other parents will tell you a lot. Good luck and keep us up to date. Deb school trouble > Tori is having a hard time in school, she is not listing and tells her > teacher no. Guest guest
, It will take me, a special ed teacher, at least the next month to get the kids into a set routine and for myself to finish adjusting to school as well. Keep a record of the behaviors that Tori is displaying, but also try to have some patience while she adjusts. The record is VERY important, however, because it will help establish a pattern of behavior and let you and/or the doctor know if something is not typical behavior. Written documentation wins out every time. Jodi Z
Guest guest
Hi , Tori just changed her entire routine, new school etc. Give it a little time. Also, the teachers expect more from the children in kindergarten then in pre-K. My daughter missed part of recess the other day because she wasn't listening to her teacher. It happens. As for which hand, this is normal but late. Normally by K the children have settled on which hand to draw/write with. However, some children do it a little later. (my RSS twin) still will do a page of tracing with one hand and then the next page with the next hand. Personally, I believe part of it is that his hand gets tired. He is left handed and uses that one first, but does still switch a lot. I made sure to tell his teacher which one is primary though to cut down on the confusion. is also on medication to help his obsessive behavior (PDD). It has definitely made a big difference in . Good luck, Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 5 year old twins > Tori is having a hard time in school, she is not listing and tells her > teacher no. Guest guest
Hi , As has been said, I think the not listening well, and the defiance, are all part of being 5 and testing boundaries, but I would make sure to support the teacher when you talk to Tori. Aidan just started K this year, no preschool experience, only a short term stint in daycare. Her teacher just talked to her mom because Aidan is a talker, and even though the teacher reminds Aidan not to talk when she's trying to, the reminder doesn't seem to last more than 30 seconds, and Aidan's off again. When he mother discussed the problem with Aidan, her only reply was that " Well, " excuse me " just doesn't work with her! " (meaning the teacher! LOL) It's a hard adjustment, especially because we as parents or g-parents have a tendency to stop our own conversations, and allow the kids to ask questions whenever they need to. We've started having Aidan wait her " turn " to speak, and it seems to be helping. I would also tend to agree that the switching of hands might have something to do with her hands tiring out, and getting sore. Have you tried suggesting shortening her pencil?? Or having her use lighter weight objects for writing? Maybe this would help.
