Guest guest
, Did you see Kathleen's response to you here: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/message/45181 This method will show you exactly what part of the shoe is rubbing his foot. Cutting out the offending part of the shoe is a tried and true solution. If you can cut out the part of the shoe that is rubbing on his foot you may be able to, with our help be able to keep his foot in for the weekend but because you also said the shoe is too big for his tiny foot, I'm thinking that mostly what you need is a different shoe! What size is it? The shoes come as small as a 0000. Many orthotists do not know this but they can be ordered directly from Markell in sizes 0000, 000, 00, 0, etc. Staying out of the shoes will almost certainly cause him to relapse at this early stage of the game. Here's what I would do, call the orthotist and tell them you need the size 0000 shoe (assuming he's not already in that size) or whatever the next size smaller is from what you already have. If he is already in a 0000 then I would talk to your doctor immediately about putting him in holding casts until his feet grow enough to wear the smallest shoe. The foot will not stay in the shoe and will not remain corrected if it is not the right size. If the orthotist does not have the 0000's then I would also have the doc put him back in a cast until the shoes come in. Oh, and if his other foot fits in the shoes you have make sure they split the sizes for you, they can and should do this so that each foot is properly fitted. There is no real answer to your question about how long he can stay out of the shoes " without messing up his treatment " -- feet have been known to relapse in a matter of hours if they are particularly resistant. The good news is that you won't be messing up his treatment, just a tiny delay. He can always have another cast to correct anything that is lost these few days, it is just important that any relapse that does happen (if it does) is recognized by the doctor and the cast is applied before going into the correct size shoes. I hope this is helpful to you and if you need more info or have more questions please feel free to ask us! Guest guest
Going even 3 days can cause a relapse unfortunatley. There is something call DuoDerm pads. You can get them from a medical supply or maybe some pharmacys. They can work if caught soon enough. They are a little spendy, but all worth it! My daughter is currently healing what my Dr. called a " pressure ulcer " which is a little worse than a blister! The DuoDerm is healing her great! She hasnt been out of the shoes any longer than an hour or so longer each day that she is supposed to be. I would truely try this stuff. Then if it doesnt work, then you will need to put him in a healing cast! Guest guest
I would suggest that you go in to see your son's doctor, and ask about having your son put in healing casts. Since he has been out of the shoes now for few days, he's likely lost correction, and getting the shoes back on now will only be more difficult. My son had to be put into healing casts as well. He had the beginnings of pressure sores on his heals. He was in those casts for 2 - 3 weeks. Once he was out, he went right back into the FAB, and hasn't had any problems since. The healing casts aren't a big deal, and they really do help get rid of sores that wouldn't heal when in the shoes.
