Acidophilus (plus several other bacterial strains that come in some preparations like Solgar's Acidophilus 40+) **are** the " good bacteria. " What you do by taking the acidophilus cultures, either in a pill or in yogurt containing the live cultures (read the label on the yogurt container) is repopulate with wo manyh good bacteria that they will overwhelm the bad guys in your gut. They don't kill them off as such, but they compete for territory in your gut, and the team with the overwhelming numbers wins! >and thus helps with the diarrhea. Is this true? I don't know what this contains, but I'd venture to say that the prep that has at least four bacterial cultures in it (e.g., Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Bulgaris, and two others that I cannot remember) would give you the best results. Often the bottles are in a refrigerated section, and you should keep them in your refrigerator at home. >At this >point, with all my rumbling and running to the loo, I figured it >couldn't hurt. Guest guest
Hi Steve. Thanks for the info. I just pulled out the bottle of Potent Acidohpilus I keep in the fridge and this is what the contents of each pill are: Citrus Pectin 100mg, Lactobacillius acidophilus 10mg, and then a 1mg blend of L.brevis, L.bulgaricus, L. caucasicus, L. salivarius and Bifidobacterium bifidium. Eeks, sounds like a science experiment! Anyway, maybe I'll keep it to one a day as to not overwhelm my system. Hopefully, that will help. > >I think I recall reading, some time ago, that Acidophilus is good in > >clearing out the bad bacteria in our bodies, > > Not quite. I'd suggest three a day, morning, mid-day and evening, for a few weeks, and then taper back to one or two. --Steve --
