Guest guest
Have the casts slipped at all??? Are his toes back further than normal? If so soak them off.. They can do more harm than good if left on and they've slipped. -------------- Original message -------------- Hello. I am a new member to this group. My son, Evan, has club feet and is in his third round of casts. He showed discomfort with the previous two rounds for about 24 hours, but then it subsided and he was back to normal. This round, however, the discomfort has lasted now a full 48 hours. He cries almost continuously and falls asleep only when he's exhausted from crying. Tylenol is no longer helping the pain. Does anyone have any suggestions for helping my little one to be more comfortable? My doctor said the discomfort should only last 24 hours, give or take. I put a call in to my doc this morning to see if he things something is wrong. In the meantime, however, I thought I'd check with the real life " experts " to see if there are any helpful hints out there.
Guest guest
Your little guy should not be in pain!! Even 24 hours after casting- its not common at all. Double check his toes-are they nice and pink and visible? Has the cast slipped at all? Is it too tight around his thigh? This is not right and call your doctor immediately! Pain is not part of the ponseti method. Who is your doctor and where are you located? If it were me, I would remove the casts!! kathleen mom to david bcf fab 12/7 > > Hello. Guest guest
I don't mean to alarm you (and I could very well be wrong), but my son only cried like that with his first cast. I thought it was just a matter of him getting used to the casting. However, when the doctor took off the cast at the following appt., we realized the reason for his crying - he had a pretty bad sore on the top of his foot. I am not saying that is absolutely the case with your son, but it COULD be a possibility. If it's inconsolable crying, then something must be wrong. If the crying is simply from frustration, it would not be as persistent. jennie4evan wrote: Hello. I am a new member to this group. My son, Evan, has club feet and is in his third round of casts. Guest guest
I have to agree with everyone else. My boy only cried while the casts were being put on because the Dr. was holding him, and while they were being removed because of the noise of the saw. If the casts are making him cry, something is wrong with the casts. If it was me I'd take them off now. Seth (meir, lcf, 1/29/04, fab 12/7) > Hello. I am a new member to this group. Guest guest
Who's your dr.? He shouldn't be uncomfortable at all. Maybe frustrated, but not uncomfortable. Is the cast too tight? Are his toes pink (squeeze them, they should be white where you squeeze them for about a second and then turn immediately pink again)? Are they warm? Can you get a fingertip at least in betweent he top of the cast and his leg? Hope he's doing better! Marcia HELP....my little boy has been crying for two straight days Hello. Guest guest
My doc is Dr. Dobbs in St. Louis. Toes are pink, turning white when sqeezed. They are warm. What does that mean? I have to check my fingertip to the top of his cast. I did that with the last cast, but hadn't done it yet with this one. I just got him to sleep and will do this when he wakes up. My doc is going to see him tomorrow am to check things out. Worst case is they cut the casts tomorrow, give him/us a break over the weekend and then re-cast Mon/Tue. He is definitely more than frustrated and this is definitely different than with the last two rounds of casts. The nurse said he could be having muscle spasms. Not sure what, if anything, they do about that. I guess we'll know more tomorrow. In the meantime, no sleep again tonight!!! Marcia wrote: Who's your dr.? He shouldn't be uncomfortable at all. Guest guest
Hmm. After reading everyone's responses, I'm a bit concerned about waiting until tomorrow to check things out. Evan had been making good progress and I hope this isn't a major set back. Marcia wrote: Who's your dr.? He shouldn't be uncomfortable at all. Maybe frustrated, but not uncomfortable. Guest guest
Jennie- Evan is in good hands with Dr Dobbs so hopefully they can figure out tomorrow(well I guess today) what was going on with Evan's feet. Best wishes! hopefully you got some sleep! kathleen > Who's your dr.? He shouldn't be uncomfortable at all. Maybe frustrated, but not uncomfortable. Is the cast too tight? Guest guest
Dr. Dobbs is known to be very good, but even Dr. Ponseti applied a cast too tight to Everett once. Keep an eye on the toes, they sound OK now but keep checking and if they turn cold, lose color or start looking blue/purple you probably want to remove the cast asap! s. Guest guest
Jennie, Please let us know what Dr. Dobbs has to say about the cast. Please be assured that Evan is in excellent hands, Dr. Dobbs is simply one of the very best clubfoot doctors in the country. I hope everything is okay! My son is a patient of Dr. Dobbs as well. Do you live in St. Louis or are you coming in from out of town to see him? Mom to Jenna (4/7/01) & Sammy (9/25/04, RCF, Dobbs brace, 14hrs/day) > Who's your dr.? He shouldn't be uncomfortable at all. Guest guest
Yeah, what she said, lol. I know our dr. is great, but one time Janna had a small red spot on the top of her foot where it was applied a bit too snug and we also removed one cast the same day it was applied because she was crying a strange for her cry and the top was tight. Couldn't get my finger in the top of the cast. Anyway, took off the cast and she had a red ring around the top of her leg. The point being, even great docs can goof once in a while, they are just human Sounds like you've got a great dr., I've heard nothing but praise for Dr. Dobbs. I would probably take the cast off now, since he's inconsolable, and you are going in tomorrow a.m. anyway. Regardless though, do what you think is best and let us know what he says. Guest guest
Jennie, I'm so glad that Evan is doing better in his cast. Isn't a the best? So Evan sees Dr. Dobbs at Children's? My son, Sammy sees him there too. We live further out, in Wentzville, but I make the commute daily since I work at Washington University Med School, so it is really no different when I have to bring Sammy in for his appointments. I work in the building right next door to Children's. Sam has an appointment to see Dr. Dobbs on Tuesday, the 21st, will you guys be in that day? > > Who's your dr.?
