OT - Rolling over?

Eli is 7 months and has been in the DBB since 9weeks (after his

tenotomy). He has been rolling from back to front with NO problems

since 4 1/2 months, but he cannot (or will not) roll from stomach to

back. I wouldn't care so much but after being on his stomach for 10

minutes or so he gets REALLy tired of it and fusses and cries until

someone helps him get back (at which point he usually rolls back to

his stomach....cuz he can). Just chalk that up to one of those things

you have to deal with re: babies (like picking up toys when they

throw them on the floor), BUT about 2 weeks ago he started rolling

over in his crib. He's always been a back sleeper, and now when I put

him in his crib (naps, nighttime..doesn't matter), I end up having to

go in and 'fix' him a few times. It's getting very frusterating

because he is really good at putting himself to sleep, but when I go

in (after 10 min or so) to roll him back (becuase he's fussing so

much), he then gets mad cuz I came in the room, but I won't play with

him... HELP!! Has anyone else gone through this with the bar? I try

to help him roll over with the bar, without the bar...he just can't

(won't) get it....

TIA

,

I don't know if this will be any consolation, but unfortunately, you

can't blame this one on the bar. :) Lots of my friends' babies have

gone through this where they hate " tummy time " but are slow to

engage in rolling from tummy to back. My youngest took a long time

to learn to roll from tummy to back also (without a brace).

All I can recommend is to keep working with him on learning to roll-

instead of rolling him all the way over, just give him a little bit

of an angle and make him twist himself the rest of the way over.

Help him position his arms the right way. Use toys or other items

that he'll want to grab at as motivation to reach out and change

position. How is his arm strength?

Is he a big boy? Sometimes if the baby is bigger, they have to

build up a lot of strength to gain that mobility. I know a baby who

never did learn to roll over in either direction....she was pretty

big (and wide!) and not very motivated to do it I guess. :) She

went right onto other activities eventually. She didn't pull to a

stand until she was nearly 1. Now, she's 2 and won't slow down for

anything (except food! LOL!).

I hope he'll figure it out soon for your sake!

Hugs!

Have you tried using a sleep positioner in his bed? That may prevent him from

rolling over while putting himself to sleep.
