Guest guest
Jodi, I have tried the Farrell valves in the past and in actuality, they seem to make it worse. I don't know why, but always seemed worse when I put that on him. I haven't tried it recently though. Maybe it is worth a shot. Thanks for the offer and advice. I still have some in the closet! ) Any other suggestions?? Jodi R. > Jodi, > > What about using a Farrell Valve? Do you have any left? Guest guest
Jodi, My guess is that the anesthesia and pain meds slowed down his gut a bit and that is why he is having problems. Our kids have fragile gastric systems and it takes little to upset the balance of things. I know you did not use much of the pain med, but he did have the anesthesia and other stuff in the hospital. It's going to take time to get things to set themselves right again and you are going to have to find some tricks to help that along. Does take Miralax? I can't remember. If there is a back-up in his colong, it can slow things down. Is he getting enough liquids? Anything you can do to flush his system will help. And try regular venting if the Farrell Valve is making things worse. Don't wait for him to say he needs it or to show signs. Just plan on every hour, or two hours, or whatever, to vent, even if it's only a minute or two. Keeping him moving will help as well. I know he is active, so that should not be a problem. And when he eats, make sure he gets fiber. That's all I can come up with for now. I hope this helps in some small way! Jodi Z
Guest guest
Thanks Jodi. Your suggestions make sense. He did have the anesthesia and nerve block while he was in surgery, and I am sure it did slow him down some. Seems like his bowel movements have been typical of what he does. But, he probably still has some back up maybe. Also, I just thought about the water thing today. I do need to start giving him more water since I saw that his lips are dry looking again for the first time in a while. I have been giving him his normal amount, but evidently he is needing more. And, I did remember that it tends to help them with their bowel movements. So, thank you for the suggestions. They really do help. I don't vent him during the day anymore, but I think I will put his other extension on when he wakes up from his nap and see if I can get any air out.
