Guest guest
> I just came from the doctors today because my WBC is very elevated. Part of it is from the steroids but the primary is not sure why it is so high (higher than what is should be for being on steroids). He did discover that my sinus are inflammed and wants to order a CT Scan of my sinus. Is this another issue with the neuro sarc? I did read that neuro sarc can affect the sinus as well. Would the neuro sarc also cause my WBC to be elevated? The primary also perscribed a high dose of anibiotics to fight the infection in my body. Has anyone experienced these problems? I haven't had any sinus problems, but since sarcoid can affect just about anything in the body, I suppose anything is possible? I had elevated WBC in my lumbar puncture, and it's been a bit elevated recently when I had bronchitis. Generally elevated WBC means you're fighting an infection of some sort, but no doubt it's more complicated than that when you add in neuro-sarc and all the meds we take. It's much easier to get infections when you're on Pred and immune suppressants, and I've certainly had more antibiotics in the past year or so than at any time previously! I hope the antibiotics do the trick for you. I ended up on 'double' antibiotics when I had bronchitis (ie two different ones), and one of them was at 4 times the normal dose. The doctors do get a bit jumpy when you're on immune suppressants! Hope you're feeling improved as soon as possible!! xo

Guest guest
Hey, La, we've been missing you at the chat. Guess you haven't felt up to it. I've been fortunate to have only 3 or 4 sinus infections in my entire life. I know how miserable I was; can't imagine the chronic sinusitis some of you have to deal with. Have you tried the Neti Pot or another type of sinus rinse? I resisted for a long time, despite all the testimonials (sounds like an infomercial!) from folks on this list. But I finally got one & it works wonders! Even with just a cold, it clears those babies out & I can breathe better. Yes, the sarc can attack your sinuses. I forget--are you on anything besides the Pred? Maybe another drug would have a better affect on the sinuses. Hopefully, some other members will chime in here about their experiences. Do you know what your WBC is; also what is the differential (they analyze the different types of white blood cells--neutrophils, etc.). Which ones are elevated can help indicate what type of infection you have. Many people with sarc maintain a low-grade fever, so a slight elevation in WBC would make sense. I don't know that sarc alone would cause a significant elevation in WBC. These would be good questions to write down & ask your docs. If they say they don't know, ask how you could find out. The best docs aren't afraid to admit they don't know something, but they DO know how to find out & are willing to do that. When I had my first arrhythmia back in 1994, the drugs they sent me home on weren't working very well & one of them had an unaccceptable side affect. So I talked to an internist at the hospital & he sat me down with a PDR (drug reference). He looked up one drug, read through the info & said, No, that's not good for your asthma. Then he went on to the next drug. He kept this up until he found the drug he thought would be best. Sure enough, that kept the arrhythmia under control, with no side affects. That's the kind of doctor I respect & trust. When you say the doctor prescribed a high dose of antibiotics in your body, does that mean that he/she doesn't know what kind & where the infection is, so he's just using the shotgun approach, hoping something hits the target? I'd question the plan here. Another question I have is, have you been having a lot of sinus infections? Often when someone has frequent or recurring sinus infections, there is a fungal infection. If you don't treat that, the symptoms will just return. Ramblin' RoseCo-owner/Moderator A merry heart is good medicine. Guest guest
Thanks Rose. You are always so very informative. I miss the chats too. I am only on Prednisone 40 mg. The doctors keep going back and forth whether to put me on Remicade or something else. Thats another conversation. The dr said that my WBC count was 21 and bacteria part was high. He is not for certain where the infection is so he perscribed antibiotics (the shotgun approach). However, he did say that my sinus were really red and inflammed. Which is why he wants to get a CT scan of my sinuses. I am calling another neurologist and rheumatologist on Monday to get a second opinion because noone seems to know what to do and how to treat. Guest guest
La, I'm sorry you've been out so long I know how you feel I've had the worst URI since my last Hospitalization that took close to 5 weeks to get under control and then had 2 or 3 relapse's since. Simply some times I just feel like this disease is Kicking my Ass and I hate losing. Anyway, I have a question, you said "He did discover that my sinus are inflamed" To me that infers the possibility that you weren't having any sinus problems, that he was examining you and found inflammation (which doesn't have to be an infection). Is this the case or were you having severe sinus issues? Because the next step depends on what your symptoms (if any) you were having, Mitch Missing In Action - Questions????? Hello to everyone. Guest guest
I am sorry you are going through as well. I hope that you start to feel better soon. I have not had any major issues juts headaches and stuffuiness. Since I am on prednisone, he thinks that may be why.I am going to call the neurosurgeon on Monday. I am wondering if my shunt may be infected. I was on line reading about the shunt. The past two days I have been really dizzy and nausea. I am not sure if its the shunt or the side effects of the Avelox (antibiotics) that the dr gave me. Guest guest
Nausea and dizziness can be side effects of Avelox (Nausea more then the other) in fact Nausea is the most common side effect. But strong antibiotics like avelox shouldn't be used unless they know what their dealing with. It only fights acute bacterial sinus infections caused by just a few strains of Bacteria. We of all people have to be careful about using antibiotics willie nillie (I can't believe I just used that expression lol) so they work when we really need them. It doesn't sound like you had a sinus infection and if you did it doesn't sound bad enough for Avelox or for a C-Scan. I think you need to see someone who's not just going to put you on more meds just out of the blues and order tests because he feels inflammation in your sinus's. He have a ball in my area (we're in the top ten in the country for allergies) He have a ball giving everyone antibiotics and ordering tests. Be careful with what you take, research things carefully and use the people on this board (there are so many people that know so much it continues to blow me away). I don't know how long your going to be on the Avelox (5-10 days is normal depending on what it's treating) but if the dizziness doesn't go away call your doctor and tell him, That's another thing, don't feel bad calling your Doctor as often as you need, that's what their there for, Feel better Missing In Action - Questions????? Guest guest
I get a lot of sinus infections, my sinuses are full of sarcoid, the left being worse then the right. I do sinuses rinses often, just to keep what little space I have clear, to keep down the infections, as far as the WBC, I have never had a problem with it being up, even when I have a infection, I'm also one of those that don't run a fever. Right now I am battling Bronchitis, leaving Thurs. for a long weekend with my husband to Seattle, so hope this gets better, or I may have to go in before we leave. Hope you get to feeling better soon. I hope this email finds everyone well as to be expected. Sorry I have been MIA for a while. Have not been feeling well and my eyes were bothering me. Tried to catch up on some the the emails. You all have been busy, LOL. I get a lot of sinus infections, my sinuses are full of sarcoid, the left being worse then the right. I do sinuses rinses often, just to keep what little space I have clear, to keep down the infections, as far as the WBC, I have never had a problem with it being up, even when I have a infection, I'm also one of those that don't run a fever. Guest guest
Thank you so much for that information. I will definitely call tomorrow. Funny you should say research. I started thinking that it was the Avelox so I went on line and looked up the medication. I will definitely be calling the doctor tomorrow. Thanks again this was very helpful. See that is why I love this support group. To: Neurosarcoidosis Sent: Sunday, May 22, 2011 9:16 PMSubject: Re: Missing In Action - Questions?????
