Hi all,

My son is 10 months old now and wearing the shoes only when he sleeps

at night. However, he is a real mover at night, smacking the side of

the crib numerous times, getting stuck sideways, and I have also

caught him sitting on his knees multiple times as well screaming. So

my question is, If the crib isn't working out and a toddler bed is

unsafe at this time, what other options are out there? I have research

numerous avenues and have come up blank. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

's mom

Have you tried a portable crib (pack'n'play) yet? With the soft sides, 's

not as likely to wake himself up banging on the sides or get his bar stuck.

Many parents report that their children sleep with their FAB propped up on one

of the sides--and are very comfortable. You can have a layer of foam cut to

size for extra padding since these do not usually have much of a matress.

Another thing to check on if the night-waking is a pretty recent thing is the

fit of his bar. Many children will get very restless at night when their bar

gets to be too short and the FAB is just plain uncomfortable. Most children are

happiest when the FAB is set up so that the distance between the heels of the

shoes is the same as the width of their shoulders. An easy way to check this is

to hold the FAB up to 's shoulders, he should fit right between the shoes

with no squeezing. It's worth a check even if is just a very wiggly

sleeper.

Hope this helps some. Please don't hesitate to ask any other questions you

might have.

Hi. My son is in a similar situation and I found that those play-pens

(pack-and-plays) are great as beds for these little ones. I bought a thin foam

pad to place on the bottom of the play pen to help cushion it and topped it with

a sheet and it's working out great. It's large enough for him to be comfortable

in and no risk of him falling out of. The mesh sides don't allow for any banging

noise from the brace. Hope this helps.

We used a high bumper pad but our little guy still messed up his crib with his

shoes. There are scratches and dents everywhere but he eventually got used to

it. The most important things you can do for him is keep him comfortable and

stick to a routine. We ended up putting a full size thin pillow on the head

side of the crib and laying him on his back with his head on the pillow and

taking a small pillow and putting it underneath his lower part of his legs. We

did this when he was about 10 months old. I know that all the research you do,

you will not find anything about that because everybody is nervous about putting

pillows in there with them but there legs are all tied up and it's difficult for

them to get comfortable in there because of that. With being on an apnea

monitor, it sort of gave us that extra piece of mind just in case something did

happen. That's how we got through it, so hopefully our advice helped a little.

Oh, and if you don't have a high

bumper pad, just use thick blankets and hang them over the side. Make sure and

tuck them in as much as you can on the sides so he can't pull them off as easy.

Also, remember I am a guy and you know how guys usually do the more aggressive

approach to things, so I'm curious to see all the messages coming back on this.

Hopefully, it helped a little but I do know one thing, we had the same problem

you are currently having and we thought that it would never end. Thanks for

reading.

I posted about this same problem last week. My son is 13 months old

and we have given up on the crib and moved to the pack and play. For

the last three months, he has usually woken up very early in the

morning...4:30, 5, 5:50 or 6, crying and obviously still tired. We

tried different things with the shoes and the bar but the problem

continued. He got several teeth all at once so we thought that was

the problem. Finally, last week we switched to the pack and play for

naps and night time. It took him a few days to adjust to not getting

up early and I am happy to report that the last two mornings he woke

up a little after 7 am happy and talking. (just watch, now that I

have written this, he will be up at the crack of dawn tomorrow.)

I wish we would have known about the pack and play. That's something we didn't

think of.

Hi there, my one year old son, e, has been in the shoes and

dennis brown bar since december after 2 surgeries and 5 months of

casts. He wore it for 23 hrs until the end of april and since then for

14 hrs per day. he is doing better BUT ALSO WAKES UP DURING THE NIGHT,

KICKS AND SCREAMS and is obviously very uncomfortable and annoyed. It

is very sad to experience because there is nothingt one can do really,

except take them off, which is a non-option. We have him sleeping with

us in our king bed -- and although it can get tight with the three of

us, especially when e decides to sleep side-ways, the closeness

and knowing we are there with him seems to pacify him quite a bit. I

also breasfeed him to calm him down and get him back to sleep, and this

seems to work well. We tried the crib for the longest time, but he

would not go back to sleep and cried incessantly. It is very exhausting

and we have been very sleep deprived since his birth, but co-sleeping

seems to work for us because it's one way for everyone to get some

rest. I hope this helps a little. Warmest wishes, and the best of

luck!! Assunta (nuscadagon@...)
