Hi everyone- I had my endoscopy today (not nearly as icky as I

thought it would be although my throat feels really swollen...whew)

Anyway, while I was waiting to have it done, a spoke with a couple of

nurses and they asked why I was having it done (the endoscopy). I

explained that I was going to have WLS and they said " ohhh " you all

know what kind of " ohhh " I'm talking about...the kind followed by a

grimace and a mental judgement (sigh). So I asked why they responded

like that...they explained that they saw a lot of patients in their

office with problems... " eek " I thought... " what kind of problems? " I

asked...their response was that lots of people come in with blocked

stomas and various problems... " ahhhhh " (I responded..lol). That wont

be me...I'm having another kind I said.

I explained the surgery to them and they seemed really surprised

about the DS..they had never heard of it (and they worked in a

bariatric surgeons office...weird huh?). After the procedure I went

outside to wait for my mother..and while I'm sitting on the bench a

woman comes and sits next to me. We started talking...out of the

blue, she turns to me and says " never have gastric bypass. " A weird

topic of conversation to begin with considering she doesn't even know

me, but oddly appropriate considering my plans.

I asked why I shouldn't...and she said " cause you're sick all the

time " ... " vomit all the time " I asked if she had, had gastric bypass

(she was tiny) and she said yes, but she is going to have a revision

cause she wants to be normal again. Tired of being sick and

hospitalized all the time. She was just getting out of the hospital,

again, after 4 days. I mentioned the BPD/DS and she didn't know

anything about it. I explained how the stoma doesn't get blocked and

NO dumping. She was upset that she wasn't aware of this choice

before having her surgery.

All in all it was a weird day...one step closer to my surgery (with

endoscopy out of the way) and even more sure of my choice after the

conversations today. Coincidence? Validation? Fate? Whatever it

was...I'm oddly comforted by it and just want to share it with

everyone.

Take care,

, thanks for sharing that story! kinda eerie, but confirming.

I can totally relate to how alot of the medical professionals whom

were performing my pre tests reacted when i told them I was having

surgery. Most of the women gave me that, your crazy look and " have

you tried this or that? " But, the males all were so excited for me( i

am female), especially the GI and neuoroligist that is taking care of

my sleep apnea. Of course all of these females were not MO. I am sure

they ment well and have seen a lot of issues w/ RNY, no experience w/

ds( where I live) and they just did not want to see me travel the

same road. I tried to explain the DS to all, but know one ever heard

of it. At this point I am tired of explaining it and i wont, I feel

like I am trying to justify my self to everyone that gives me " that

look " . I just know that all the health care folks, family and friends

that think this is not the answer, will be trying to get so much info

out of me once they see the results. I know it may not be a bed of

roses in the beginning, but I have confidence that it will be okay in

the long run and I too will finally have some normalcy in my life...

at least I can move onto other issues, topics, problems, delights etc

instead of this FAT being the star of my show daily. Thanks again! BB

There you go ! You came thru ok and on top of that you were an angel

being there to talk to several people while waiting for your mom!

God puts you in the most interesting situations, doesnt He??

,

I think you were meant to have that procedure today in order to act

as angel for a couple of folks, and it sounds like you did an

outstanding job of it! Ok...now spill on the damn procedure!

Laughing. Did you try a losenge afterwards for your sore throat and

is it still sore? Did you see any of the equipment they use or did

they hide it? How long were you asleep and how did they knock you

out!

Nervous on the west coast!

Hugs,

Theresa

Hi -

When the nursing staff in the ER at the hospital I work in found out

I was having WLS I heard the same thing. " No, really, you DO NOT want

to have gastric bypass surgery. " One said she'd never met a WLS

patient who was healthy. They get a lot of patients in with blocked

stomas and malnutrition problems.

Last week I went down to the ER to say hello to a friend. The RN who

said she'd never seen a healthy WLS patient didn't recognize me! I

was walking past her and said, " Hi . " Then walked on. About 10

steps away I hear " MARY ????? Is that really you? " She was totally

amazed. Not only have I lost a significant amount of weight but I

keep being told how wonderful I look, that I have a healthy glow. I'd

tried to explain the difference between the DS and the RNY before but

now they REALLY want to know about the DS. I showed them Dr. Husted's

website with the slide show of the DS. They were fascinated. LOL
