GI Results for Ian and Question

Well, Ian's Gastroenterologist called this evening. From Ian's test

last Friday, the GI has not yet had a chance to review the actual x-

ray but read me the attending physician's notes - Ian does not

appear to be showing any signs of reflux. I didn't think he had

that anyway - but, it's always good to rule it out. My concern

though, which I mentioned to our GI doc this evening, Ian has been

complaining for the last two weeks that his belly hurts. Well, the

preliminary attending docs' comments at the time of the x-ray says

that there is a definate narrowing and thinning of the small

intestine. It does not seem to be causing any problems with food

traveling down to the large intestine. There were no comments about

tumors or what-have-you. But, he wants to review the x-ray and set

Ian up for an ultrasound right away. If necessary, we may have to

consider a CT Scan after the ultrasound depending on the results. I

will probably get a second opinion before I do a CT Scan. What I

like about this doc though is that he doesn't want Ian to have any

more radiation than he needs - thus, his reason for doing an

ultrasound first. He said there was no indication of malrotated

intestines which he was looking for. His blood tests do not show

any sign of malnutrition (I knew that) - but, he does have a

slightly elevated AST - which is a liver reading and his white blood

count was slightly up. Now, he also suggested that there may have

been some cramping - but, that narrowing/thinning is not usually a

cramp type. I suggested he may have had a virus because he did have

diarreah this weekend - but, Ian did complain of his stomach hurting

before and after the diareah and his bowels are back to " normal "

now - and he's still complaining.

My question is - has anyone ever had this type of communication with

the small intestine in their GI studies with their children?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.

- H

Our docs were concerned about the elevated liver enzymes and wanted to do a

biopsy, but I first tried switching him from the Ensure Plus which had corn

oils to the Pdeiasure or regular Ensure and Udo's oil, which had tons of

calories but didn't elevate liver enzymes. His enzymes returned to normal,

and he was spare a biopsy. He also digested more food more comfortably.

It is sold on-line at VitaminShoppe.com, if you want to check it out. We

tended to put a tablespoon in with 8 oz of Pediasure or Ensure. If he

doesn't get many fatty foods, though, another common thing to elevate liver

enzymes is fighting viruses...

Inga, thank you. This is exactly the kind of response I need right

now :). When the nurse calls me today to set up the ultrasound and

fax me his test results, I will be sure to have her give a message

to the physician to call me regarding this. Thank you very much.
