Tell me it isn't so, and that it won't happen to me. >> Sheri: it doesn't happen to everyone... I was a statistical oddity and didn't experience this as a postop. Sure, I had gas and discomfort at times but I could eat (4=6 oz initially!). I thought something was WRONG with me... I even asked Dr. Gagner if my stomach was made larger than normal! He said it was the same as everyone elses and really didn't offer much reasoning as to why I didn't have problems eating... I have no idea why my stomach did not have any bad reactions to food, etc. I remember having some gassy full feeling when I ate broccoli for the first time but that passed after about 30 minutes. I did burp a lot --- I think being able to burp most likely helped me be less gassy and/or not let the stuff in the stomach irritate it? I actually recall LOVING TO EAT immediately post-op! It was like everything tasted wonderful (I was on some weird three week post-op high, though) and I relished my tuna, cottage cheese with fresh apple slices, chickarina soup with meatballs, soy chicken nuggets... And I stopped when I felt full and was satisfied. It wasn't until I was a few months post-op that I started to get episodes where I just didn't want to eat and nothing appealed to me. I still have days like that -- I will just not feel hungry at all and have to make myself eat something. Other days it seems like I'm ravenous! My severe gas episodes have been few and far between -- I'm 10 1/2 months post-op and I can count them on one hand. When I had them they were pretty intense, though! I'm not sure if it was stress-induced or something I ate but I was pretty damn uncomfortable. I haven't thrown up bt one time when I drank some iced coffee at this Korean store in Flushing. It was just the coffee that disagreed with me... I remember thinking there really wasn't much that can fit in there because only a little bit of coffee came up! Not the same as throwing up pre-op! LOL so, I've been uncomfortable after I've eaten something but it was usually a somewhat delayed reaction (perhaps when the food hit the upper intestines - that's where I always experienced the discomfort, not in the stomach). Then, the feeling subsided/passed after about 30 minutes (with the exception of the one time I had SEVERE IBS/spastic colon and it lasted an entire day!). I would HATE to have that all the time or experience that every day. It would be unbearable.... I totally empathize with anyone who is going through this post-op... The thing that usually helped me when I had bad gas was taking some Maalox. That's about all I did and it seemed to work... all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 dr. My scale actually moved down 1.5 lbs this morning, so I am sure yours will soon do the same. I have been through 2 marriages on the rocks. The 2nd one has managed to come back together after almost a 9 month seperation. I will be praying for you that things work out for the best in your situation. I was trying to encourage you to know that it won't always be this bad and/or that not all people experience this problem... If I would have looked through the messages and realized you really WERE post-op, I think I wouldn't have said anything! I don't want to rub anything in... and it's bad enough as it is when someone's going through the aches and pains of post-op life. I have had a tremendously smooth physical recovery BUT I'm experiencing severe problems with my dh and marriage on the rocks... so everyone has their own problems, just a different package! Actually, I'm VERY grateful that I've been so well physically or I think I'd be on the edge with all the emotional stuff I'm going through. Now, I'm getting paranoid that I'll never lose this last 28-30 lbs... I'm 10 1/2 months post-op and still hovering around 198-199.... The scale hasn't BUDGED since then! I know, it's just a plateau, etc. but I'm in my doubting phase now! LOL all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt.
