Typically one spends 5-7 nights in the hospital, depending on your

condition going in. It can be longer if complications arise.

I really didn't need much. Slippers are usefull, though the hospital

booties were fine for walking. Women are said to need appropriate

hygene products (can't comment personally on that).

Maybee some liqued tylenol, some chewable multi-vitamins. Don't

stock up much on food, as you will not know what goes down well until

you try things. I found that I like sherbit as a treat, eggs and

cheese go well. I eat very small hamburgers and a tiny bit of

chicken or sausage - and I do mean a tiny bit.

Protien shakes and bars might come in handy. You should stock up on

water bottles.

Hi Tracey!

Great name! Love the spelling, too! ;)

I left the hospital the morning of day 5. I stayed in town for my

follow up on Tuesday because I lived 5 hours away. I've heard a 3-5

day stay is average.

I would also suggest taking chapstick to the hospital. Really helped

me through those first few days when they only allowed me ice chips.

Keeps your mouth from feeling so dry.

For after surgery extras, a sipper would be a good idea so you can

have water with you at all times. Also, something that's helped me

enormously is a " grabber " . It's just a plastic long handled device

you use to pick things up that you will inevitibly drop. It won't

work for something heavy like a soup can but it's great for just

about anything else, toilet paper, napkins, small box of instant

mashed potatoes, wallet, telephone handset, etc.

Good luck with your surgery!!

1. avg stay is 3-7 days. depends on your situation. lucky me i was

in for 2 wks and 2 days. i was very ready to get out of there! lol

2. i took way too much stuff. you don't really need much. take your

slip on houseshoes or even a pair of thongs to walk in. take

personal care items: toothbrush and paste, shampoo and soap,

deodorant, hair brush, lotion, chapstick, babywipes or cottonelle

wipes, wood spoon or tongs to reach your tushie (if you have that

problem), ask for a peri-care bottle to help rinse off before

wiping. never used a nightgown, just wore the hospital's. used a

second one worn backwards for a housecoat when walking halls. you

probably won't feel like reading while you are in, so skip the books

and mags. just veg out with the tv on. you will be sleeping alot.

take some really loose clothes with you to wear home. i was very

swollen after surgery so had to borrow a housedress from my MIL to

wear home. dresses are most comfortable afterward. no elastic

waists to bother you near your incision(s).

oh yeah, take some sanitary pads just in case your period starts

after surgery. i spotted for a few days.

it's good to take a small notebook and pen so you can keep a journal

of your experience. write down what your doc says when he visits.

write down questions as you think of them so you will have them ready

when you see the doc. i have read my notes several times as things

get fuzzy after a while and i don't remember them clearly. then at

home i used it to write down the day/time of when i took meds and how

much i would eat/drink. if i ran a temp, had pains, whatever. it's

really very helpful.

3. tylenol tabs for general aches and pains, if you aren't using RX

pain meds. a fever thermometer to make sure you don't start running

a temp. chewable vits, flintstones brand was palatable. some

peroxide and antibiotic ointment for wound care at home, or ask the

hospital for some to take with you. i just took what they had been

using on me in my hospital room. they would have thrown it away

after i left. a chair/bedside table to keep your water and meds and

books/mags in easy reach. plastic spoons and forks and

plates/bowls/cups so you don't have to worry about washing dishes for

a while.

that's all i can think of for now. hope this helps. good luck!
