Guest guest
my 10-1/2 month old son has one clubfoot, and he has been walking along furniture for quite sometime now, but has recently been falling alot. and we are working with him too to learn to walk. well his clubfoot leg is about an inch shorter than the " good " one, and we were wondering if there's anything we can do about it now to help down the road without having surgery. we're not sure if there's a way to maybe stunt the growth of the good leg, or really what, if any, our options are right now. please shed some light for our little man Mason. thanks--niki
Guest guest
Welcome, Niki & Mason! We're glad to have you aboard! Has Mason's doctor discussed the leg length discrepancy with you at all? An inch seems like a lot for such a little guy! I don't know of any non-surgical options to even out the legs. I know they can either stunt the growth of the longer leg by working on the growth plates, or lengthen the longer leg with an external fixator. (www.limblengthening.org) I don't think they'd do either procedure until Mason is much older though, and I'm not sure what the difference in length would have to be before considering surgery. I would think that they would be able to make a lift for his shoe on his shorter leg right now though. Especially since the little guy is just learning to walk! Do you mind sharing what area you're in or what doctor you're using? Maybe we can recommend an orthotist near you would could work with you to get a lift for Mason's shoe! You could probably get a cobbler to do it for you also. I know that at MD Orthopaedics (who makes the Ponseti braces for Dr. Ponseti) in Iowa City could do this for you, but I don't know how far you are from there or if you're already seeing Dr. Ponseti! & (3-16-00, left cf) > > my 10-1/2 month old son has one clubfoot, and he has been walking along > furniture for quite sometime now, but has recently been falling alot. > and we are working with him too to learn to walk. well his clubfoot leg > is about an inch shorter than the " good " one, and we were wondering if > there's anything we can do about it now to help down the road without > having surgery. we're not sure if there's a way to maybe stunt the > growth of the good leg, or really what, if any, our options are right > now. > please shed some light for our little man Mason. > thanks--niki >
Guest guest
My daugheter is almost 9 months old. Her ClubFoot is LONGER than the other by 1/4-1/2 " . We havent done anything about it, and her Ortho refuses to see it. It was our family Chiropractor that confirmed it. She has a well-child check next week, and I am going to bring it up to her Ped. MD. But I think he'll just tell me that I need to talk with the Ortho. Guest guest
Hi Niki. Welcome! I know some orthos also specialize in limb lengthening. I don't know where you are located in the US. Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore (in addition) to clubfeet is also a specialist in limb lengthening. You can at least email him with specific questions regarding what treatment is best for limb lengthening and what time to start it. He is head of the orthopaedic department at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopaedics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Check it out at http://www.lifebridgehealth.org. His direct email is FRCSC @ aol.com (without the spaces) . I hope this helps. bullfrog2427 wrote: my 10-1/2 month old son has one clubfoot, and he has been walking along furniture for quite sometime now, but has recently been falling alot. and we are working with him too to learn to walk. well his clubfoot leg is about an inch shorter than the " good " one, and we were wondering if there's anything we can do about it now to help down the road without having surgery. we're not sure if there's a way to maybe stunt the growth of the good leg, or really what, if any, our options are right now. please shed some light for our little man Mason. thanks--niki
Guest guest
Hey Christee, I had thought the same thing about Grace at one point, she was about a yr old I think. My mom has an 1 1/4 in difference and it has caused her lots of back/neck probs (even though it has always given her a pretty cute wiggle...maybe That's why she's been married so many times hahaha) but seriously, me here worry wart thinkin it's heritary blah blah. I asked my Ped about it and he said that it's really really hard to diagnose limb length discrepencies in babies without x-rays. He also said that it is common for one leg to appear longer but that it's usually not the case. So try not to worry too much until you have gotten the proper tests done k. & Grace > > My daugheter is almost 9 months old. Her ClubFoot is LONGER than the other by 1/4-1/2 " . Guest guest
Has he been checked for hip dysplasia? Leg length discrepancy can be a sign of this and the sooner it's caught the better. My dd was born with both, clubfoot and hip dysplasia. Definitely needs to be checked by a pediatric ortho. Good luck! Marcia Re: clubfoot and short leg Welcome, Niki & Mason! Guest guest
Niki, That's good to hear! Mason is in good hands with Dr. Dobbs, and you would be able to get a lift (if advised by Dobbs) made for his shoe for free through the Shriners. Please keep us updated after your appointment with him! We're in IL too...but up near Champaign. Best wishes, & (3-16-00, left clubfoot)
