I am one of many (I believe) whose doctor claims to follow the Ponseti method but I am having doubts. started serial casting when he was 11 days old. After 5 casts he was put in the DBB. I've been concerned since he got his bar that something wasn't right, and it seems that I worry more and more. I am not sure if this is paranoia or intuition...I plan to take pictures of 's feet soon and place on the CFPics group for your opinions and advice. I also plan to ask his pediatrician at his 4 month check-up for a referral so we can get a second opinion. We live in the Detroit area and there is only one doctor listed in the qualified doctors in Michigan. Have any of you used a doctor in MI or know of succes stories? The doctor listed is about 2-1/2 hours away...part of me wonders if we should see him or just try to see the master himself - it's a 7-1/2 hour trip but it might be worth it... Guest guest
Kaci, Hi, don't post much anymore not a lot of time. I will give you a general overview of our story. We are from Michigan, the Detroit area (Macomb County, our son was born in November of 2002 with bi- lateral clubfoot. He was casted at 3 days old by a doctor in the area who said he does Ponseti. He does not. We changed doctors and went to Children's Hospital in Detroit. The doctor we saw initially has since moved to Dallas, but we currently see Dr. Mendelow. He does follow the Ponseti Method. He is even using the same bracing protocol 70 degree angle and leaving the brace on longer than the age of 3 which was the original protocol. Our son was casted 5 times. The castings looked exactly like Dr. Ponseti's. Dr. Mendelow is a wonderful doctor, I have sent quite a few patients with clubfeet his way. Even my best friend's nephew who was born with clubfeet. Everyone that has gone to him has nothing but good things to say. Our son did not need a tenotomy, his feet were very flexible and still are. If you saw his feet or how he runs all over you would never know he was born with clubfoot. Our pediatrician, who originally didn't believe in the method (her husband is an ortho.) has been so impressed with his feet, she sends her patients with clubfeet to him only. She has brought in several interns and students to check out his feet and tell them how they were corrected. Could I ask who you see here in Michigan? You can email me privately at bruceandcarolyn@.... I would be happy to answer any questions you have, send you pictures of his feet. Just ask. If you email me privately, I will probably answer faster. I check my email on a daily basis, just not the clubfoot board. We have 3 children total and life keeps us busy. And I gotta ask... has she managed to convince her husband to get trained in the Ponseti Method yet? Too cool! Kori
Guest guest
Kori, No, her husband only treats adults and he is mainly a joint guy (knees and hips). But I will tell you that she asked him if he had ever heard of the method. His response at the time was it is probably just some new fad.. Well, at least we got her to change her mind. I do have a funny story about this however, she had a patient born with clubfoot. When she went to the hospital to check on the baby, the nurses said they had alread called for an ortho consult, which of course was the first doc we saw. She told the nurses she was not consulting him. Their response was, he is already on his way here. She said I don't care page him and cancel the consult, they are going to someone else. Made me smile. Carolyn > > > wow!
