Guest guest
That is exactly what I do. Once they have softened up a bit, you can start exfoliating the extra dry skin with a pumice stone (wait til the cracking has heeled.) Oh and make sure the socks are cotton - anything synthetic will make your feet sweaty and possilby lead to a fungal infection. Keep using the vaseline or an unscented lotion on your heels in the future. > put lots of vaseline on your heels and then put on a pair of soxs and wear > them to bed tonight.....should be improved in the morning somewhat so repeat > again and within another day or two it should be much much better!! Guest guest
This is going to sound gross but slather your tootsie inVaseline and put on some socks overnight feet are nice and soft! And me saying I'm in alot of pain really means something because I have pain 24/7 which is bearable compared to this! I have callouses on my heels... there are cracked spots, like deep lines around both heels. It's painful to walk on my feet. I took some lotion and put it on the cuts which promptly felt like FIRE! I could barely walk on my feet to the sink in order to wipe off the lotion. I know I can't be alone here - there must be others with this problem - please, what do you do to prevent and heal cracked heels? Guest guest
Dee, I don't know if you can get it where you live but the best thing I've ever found for seriously cracked, calloused painful skin is called bag balm. Dairy farmers use it on cow's udders and horse trainers use it on horse's hoves. In rural areas you can get it most places but almost all feed stores and vets carry it. It is safe, cheap, works very quickly and doesn't hurt when you apply it. If you can't find bag balm your doctor can prescribe Lac-Hydrin cream which also works but costs more and tends to sting a bit when you put it on. If you decide to go with vaseline try soaking your feet first in water into which you've tossed an Avino (sp?) moisturizing bath tablet. After soaking for awhile, dry well, put on lots of vaseline and cotton socks. Good luck, Jo > This seems like such a minor thing but I'm in an > incredible amount of pain right now and would > appreciate some help. Guest guest
Dee, My feet got incredibly dry, cracked and painful after surgery. They're usually dry because I wear sandals most of the time, but this *hurt*. I soaked my feet first, to soften up the skin and then I slathered on moisturer as a temporary solution. I used my callus shaver(I think that's what it's called) after my skin was softened and before the moisturizer. I got the callus shaver from Sally's Beauty supply and just removed the dead skin from my heels, like they do when I get pedicures..this also makes the crack shallower and more able to heal. Once I had the energy to drive, I went and got a pedicure, just because it's great to pamper your feet and changing my toe nail polish is still somewhat of a contortionist issue. After that's done, all you need is a good moisturer for every day use and then either get a pedicure or use a callus shaver yourself, for maintenence. Guest guest
Hi Dee: I've put vaseline on my feet, then covered them with socks. This has worked really well for me. Regards, Gi > This seems like such a minor thing but I'm in an > incredible amount of pain right now and would > appreciate some help. Guest guest
Dee, Let me echo the recommendations you are getting. Vaseline is good. Bag Balm might even be better, and my recommendation for " best " is " Lotil " which is made in England and sold at http://www.vermontcountrystore.com. Lotil is formulated explicitly for cracked skin. Bag Balm is, also, though originally intended for cracked skin of cows' udders--it also healed the cracked hands of the milkers, and thus its popularity for cracked skin in humans, too. And, Judie is absolutely correct about cotton (or wool) socks--no synthetic fibers. As for shaving the callus, once it heals, Dr. Scholl offers a rasping tool that looks a bit like a small cheese grater (a spoon-like oval device with barbed holes to rasp the callus). I use is often on a corn that I get on the balls of my feet. Be careful when you use it so that you don't shave away live skin, too. Best of luck, Steve --
Guest guest
Hi Dee, Have had your problem, although not as severe. There is a product for cracked heels made by Dr. Scholls and can be found in the market. Since it is designed for the problem, hopefully it won't burn like the other lotion did. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi Dee: I hope this helps as I understand that kind of heel pain. When my heels dried out and cracked deeply I went out and bought a can of Bag Balm, I know there are other brands but this one has always worked for me. Then I soaked my feet in as hot of water as I could stand with a mild soap and soaked them for about an hour then I gently rubbed them with a foot scrubber which is a flat tool that is course on one side and less course on the other something like a finger nail file, just use it in whatever direction the skin is crack in and not against it. You will remove some of the dead skin but don't cause yourself a lot of pain if it hurts to much stop for now. Next smear the Bag Balm on the bottom of your feet so they are really coated, you will notice that the main ingredient is petroleum jelly not unlike Vaseline but the Bag Balm has something else in it that helps heal. Farmers use it on the cows udders to keep them soft so they don't hurt when they are milked. Anyway then pull on an old pair of cotton socks or some kind of thick socks and if you can leave them on over night you will see a difference by the next morning I swear! After that just do this every night until all the cracked dead skin has been removed then I just do this once a month or if my feet seem dry it also works for severely dried skin on the hands and cotton gloves or you can smear some on before you do dishes and then wear rubber gloves and using hot water then just wipe off the excess afterwards. I hope this helps it did for me and it only took a week for my heels to get back to normal, let me know how you do. Huggles, Tiger P.S. I get the Bag Balm at the drug store, (Rite Aid) usually in the lotion section but you may have to ask. Don't let them give you anything else it is not the same.
