Hi all,

Anyone have any info on uric acid or ??? I heard it was involved when

protein intake was high and the kidneys were not processing the protein as

well. I also think I heard it was connected with gout???

If this is so, how does the DS affect this if you have a high uric count?

From 9/12 to 9/17, I passed 15 kidney stones that were all 100% uric

acid. A few of them were the size and the shape of a Rice Krispy,

'cept they didn't snap or crackle; they just popped!

I don't think that's quite right. Uric acid is a metabolic breakdown

product of protein. But, if there is not enough water to carry it

off, it crystalizes in the kidneys. So, the problem is not the

kidneys per se, but the lack of sufficient water to dilute the uric

acid. I not only have to force 2 liters of water a day (which I find

hard to do), but I now take potassium citrate pills, 6 horse pills a

day, to alkalinize my urine in order to retard formation of any more

uric acid stones.

That, too. Uric acid crystals form in the joints of the extremities

like the big toe. OUCH! I have been told by others on this list

that gout is an autoimmune disease. I don't know personally if that

is true or not.

if you are prone to gout, you may have a problem. If you do not

drink enough water, you may be more susceptible than the average

person to getting uric acid kidney stones at around month 4-6.

Kidney stones tend to ruin one's day.

I would like to know about this too. I used to have gout in my big toe but

have not had it for a long time. However last night I noticed that my toe

hurt when my sheet was on it a certain way. That was one of the biggest

signs I had before that my gout was acting up. Is there a connection with

the high intake of protein?
