To answer your question, Sheryl, you do not have to

use the GF-CF diet first before trying the enzymes.

One can simply begin using the enzymes. I can say

that my son lost no gains whatsoever when he stopped

the gf/cf diet and switched to the enzymes and

actually began eating MUCH better with GUSTO and began

growing better, though still " slowly " yet " faster "

than the previous years he was on the diet.

was rather unique when he began using the enzymes in

that he was already fully " recovered " via the gf/cf

diet and I can tell you that he fully MAINTAINED his

recovery after beginning enzymes and stopping the

gf/cf diet. It was very scary for me to make the

" switch " from the gf/cf diet to using the Houston

Enzymes instead as there was no previous information

on the effects of making such a change on a child that

was fully " recovered " via the diet.

That said, I suggest beginning SLOWLY with one dose

(see note below) with one meal or snack per day for a

week, then try adding another dose with another meal

or snack again for a week, etc. until you use them

with all snacks or meals that contain gluten or

casein. Snacks, such as fruit or fruit juice, or

meals that do not contain gluten or casein do not

require use of the enzymes. I suggest phasing enzyme

use in SLOWLY as my son had a very " hyper " reaction to

beginning using the enzymes when I started by using it

with " all " meals and snacks. Then I backed off and

started using enzymes just once a day with one meal or

snack and not a " whole " capsule at a time either. Over

a few weeks, I slowly phased in using " full capsules "

and using them at all meals and snacks as needed. AS

YOUR CHILD AND OTHER YOUNG CHILDREN WITH RSS ARE SO

SMALL, I would email or call DeFelice and also

Devin at Houston Nuraceuticals for advice on " how

much " to give them at any one time. She advised me

that the dose for a child is related to the AMOUNT of

gf/cf food being " eaten " at a snack or meal rather

than to the " size " of the child. Still, I would err

on the side of caution, taking into account how

" little " or " much " your child might " eat " of GF/CF

food at any one time. The enzymes are good for 1 hour

of eating.

I only use the " Peptizyde " enzymes with my son.

Houston Nutraceuticals has 2-3 other additional enzyme

products, but as the results have been good with just

the " Peptizyde " and as I don't want to risk

becoming " allergic " to them and then not able to use

them at all, I have chosen to stick with just using

the " Peptizyde " formula. That is my choice and he has

done very well as a result. If you go to

DeFelice's websites, or your friends go there, you

will see some people use 2-3 Houston enzyme products

with their children.

DeFelice has written a book " Enzymes for Autism

and Other Neurological Conditions: a practical guide "

and is the mother of two PDD boys who benefitted

tremendously from the use of the Houston Nutraceutical

Enzymes. They now are fully " recovered " and no longer

have the " PDD " diagnosis or symptoms thereof.

Houston Nutraceuticals: www.houstonni.com

DeFelice's website: www.enzymestuff.com

There is also an online group founded for

parents whose kids are using the enzymes which you can

probably find a link to at the www.enzymestuff.com

website.

I have only used the Houston Nutraceutical enzymes as

those are the only ones that have enabled scores of

kids needing a gluten-free casein-free diet to

successfully go " off diet " . My son has now been using

the " Peptizyde " classic or original enzymes

successfully on a daily basis for almost two years.

He also has GROWN more in that time than he did in the

past 3 years put together. For two years he didn't

grow at all remaining in the same clothing size of

" 4 " . He now is 8 and wears size 6 in shirts and 7-8

in pants depending on the " cut " . He's now 47 " tall.

On the caucasian growth charts, he is in the 3-5% for

height and 50% for weight. As he is chinese, he has

also been plotted on the south chinese charts and is

still " small " on those, 10 - 15% overall.

I hope this helps. I would strongly advise your

friends who have children in the autism spectrum

without RSS to look into the Houston enzymes as they

are MUCH easier to use than the diet and with very

good results for some children. As my son is too

small to

" swallow " capsules, I just open an enzyme capsule and

tap out all of the enzyme powder on top of a plastic

spoonful of tang, water, or fruit juice. Then I place

it in my son's mouth immediately before he begins

eating a snack or meal. As I don't have " three "

hands, I use a syringe or pill box to " prop " the end

of the plastic spoon " up " so it doesn't " spill " while

I am putting the enzyme powder on top of the juice. I

have made a " kit " out of a ziplock bag, a plastic

spoon, and a smallpill box or used an eyeglass case to

carry and use Nick's enzymes conveniently at

restaurants. However, I repeat again that my daughter

who tried these enzymes for a short time in order to

eat foods with milk turned out to be severely allergic

to them, both the " classic or original " Peptizyde as

well as the " new and improved " Peptizyde. So they are

not an answer for everyone. She simply " avoids " milk

and foods with milk, butter, cheese, or whey except

for the occasional " one bite " of ice cream when we are

at a restaurant. We buy her rice dream ice cream,

sorbet, and popsicles to have at home. Popsicles are

very helpful for kids with " constipation " by the way,

due to the " guar gum " they put in them to " soften "

them a bit!

Best wishes,

Debbie
