We have been lucky in not getting any rude comments. We have had people smile and talk to our son and even a parent who just finished using a band come and say "hi" and tell us their story.

I usually just smile and talk to my son the entire time we are out, and I think when people see how "normal" everything is they get over it. Also, helmets are much more common now and most people know what they are for.

Another great trick we have been doing is having our son rock a Charger's tee with his blue camo helmet when we are out. Maybe people think we are really enthusiastic =) Estrella Moeller

My son just got his band on Monday. I know people will stare but honestly, most people have no idea what it is for. I think most people are curious. I also think it is a great way to educate the public. Try not to take it personally when people say things or stare, the good news is your child doesn't know the difference. It is just us as protective parents that get our feelings hurt. > > Any suggestions on how to deal with rude ans ignorant people who ask "what's> > wrong with your son?" My 6

Hi,

We never got a rude comment either!  We are in the same geographical

area, so maybe people here are more accepting.  Although I found a

lot of people I've run into have seen the helmets, but don't know

what they are for.  Unfortunately, this is how I was until a dad

told me when needed it at 11.5 months.  It is true they are

much more common than 5 years ago.  When was a baby, I had

never seen one.  If I had know about them then, I would have at

least had evaluated.

Best,

Kathy, mom to 2 years and 6 years

I have never had a rude comment- at least not yet. Most people may simply ask and then I am able to educate them.

Hello,

I did the same when they asked me, I was able to educate them. Never had any bad or rude comments about my boy. Actually most people thought it was used to protect his head when falling. I don't think ppl ask what's wrong with your son or daughter to be rude but mostly because they're curious and also that they might help other ppl what the band is for (you never know). Don't you think?

I decorated my son's helmet with Disney CARS stickers and on the back it has "Mater" (the tow truck) and letter stickers saying "just fixin' my flat", with some little tire stickers around Mater. It is really cute and it is self explanatory for anyone standing around us. I haven't had any questions, just stares. Except Fannie, my favorite cashier at the local Food Lion. She's a very friendly african american lady. When she saw Trevor's helmet she loudly said "what you got on that baby's head?" It embarrassed my husband. I had to explain it to her. She's used to it now when we go in. Don't worry about other people's stares and comments. My husband still has a difficult time in public. (VERY DIFFICULT). He met me at the mall after work the other day and begged me to take it off

until I did.

I can't believe how people STARE! Really, I wish people would just ask me why he is wearing the band, rather then staring at him like he has the plague. Funny, story...we were at church and a lady sitting next to us said, "You're son is ok, right?" I answered,"Yes." She said, "So everythings ok with him?" I answered, "Yes." And then she just smiled. I feel like putting a post-it on his head saying, I am wearing this because I have a FLAT HEAD! > > > Any suggestions on how to deal with rude ans ignorant people who ask
