Guest guest
We're adopting a baby boy that is going to be born very soon. We're reading, reading, reading, and trying to absorb lots of information, so please forgive us for not remembering if you're having to repeat yourself in answering our question. Our baby has Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, and bilateral CF. We're feeling comfortable with most of that information. Today we found out he may also have an additional health problem (hernia in his diaphragm). His birthmom is being sent to UAB for evaluation and probably to have a c-section later this week. Since we'll be at UAB, has anyone on this list used doctors there for the CF? What's your opinion on them? Do you have names you'd recommend? Thanks, Donna

Guest guest
Hi Donna and welcome to the group. Congrats on your soon to be arrival! Clubfoot with SB is a little different than just clubfoot, my first instinct is to tell you that his clubfeet will probably be secondary to working on his other issues. However, you will still want someone who really knows what they are doing with clubfoot. My recollection is that there are no Ponseti qualified physicians in Alabama. I would suggest that you look at options for traveling to another state for care, although I would think that the hydrocephalus and hernia might take precedence, I don't really know that much about these conditions. I do know that the Shriner's hospital in St. Louis, MO has both a clinic that specializes in SB and one of the leading clubfoot doctors in the country, Dobbs. The docs at Shriners in St. Louis are mostly doctors from St. Louis Children's Hospital which ranks in the top 10 children's hospitals in the country. If you are not familiar with the work that Shriners does - they provide free medical care to anyone, yes anyone, all you have to do is fill out an application. They may want to send you to the LA Shriners. I would not recommend this. Unfortunately, the Shriner's in Louisiana is known for NOT being a good place to go for clubfoot treatment. I don't really know anything about their competence with SB. You can tell them that you only want to go to the St. Louis Shrine, they will allow it, but you may not be able to get free transportation there through them. However, free flights exist for medical care through many groups such as Angel flights and Wings of Hope. Also, there are 2 Mc Houses and a Haven House in St. Louis, both provide low cost housing for families who are traveling for medical care. I hope this is not too much information, I just do feel that it is important that you start with doctors who are the best. Hope this helps! Good luck with the birth!
