Guest guest
Hi Sara, Welcome to the group! I have twin boys who are 3 1/2 years old now. One of them has a clubfoot and is still wearing the DBB. He also wore it full-time from about 3 to 6 months old, then we gradually went down to 18h, 16h, 14h, 12h, and now he's only wearing it at night (10-12h). Anyway, he had no trouble moving around with the DBB at all, you'll be amazed, and the boys reached all their milestones (like rolling over, sitting up, crawling, standing, walking) within a week of each other, so it really made no difference at all. The only real 'limitation' I think he ever had, was that Alister couldn't get on the ride-ons with the DBB on. So when they were at that age I used to hide their ride-ons until his brace could come off in the afternoon, so that he didn't have to watch while his brother was able to ride around. That worked well and I don't think he ever felt like he was disadvantaged or anything. Hope this helps, with (3.5y) and Alister (3.5y, right CF, Ponseti method, UK) --- twobabygirls2006 wrote: > Hi everyone. Guest guest
While my 18 month old isn't walking yet, he crawls everywhere in it. He only has it on for a little while when he is awake, so the fact that he learned so quickly how to do this was surprising especially because he is so delayed in his development. Don't worry, she will definitely be able to keep up with her twin! 11/19/04 twobabygirls2006 wrote: Hi everyone. Here's a little information about me. Guest guest
Hi there and welcome to the group. Congratulations on your twin daughters. Wearing the brace does not limit a child's mobility at all. These children turn over, crawl, and even walk in their brace. It becomes second nature to them. The only thing is that the dennis brown brace is a bit heavier than another alternative (the Ponseti/ brace). It doesn't mean your little girl won't be able to move around in it. It may just take her a wee bit longer to gain the strength to lift the brace when rolling over. All in all, the brace won't compromise her mobility by much. twobabygirls2006 wrote: Hi everyone. Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the club! I have a 2 1/2 year old boy who has been wearing the FAB since he was 2 months old. He's a Go Getter! The FAB has not slowed him down developmentally one single little bit. There are very few children who suffer any delays, and most often those are related to some other issue involved, not the clubfoot and brace. The hours in the brace are reduced gradually, you child will meet her mile stones just fine. Keep in mind all children develop differently and your twins won't be right on track with each other no matter what. Good luck! ee Mother of 3 Clubfooted Sons: - Bilateral Club Feet April 1998 Everett - Bilateral Club Feet September 2003 Garrison - Bilateral Club Feet March 2006 New to the group and I have a question Hi everyone. Guest guest
Hi Sara-who do you see in Rochester? My 4 yr. old, Jaren, sees Dr. Shaughnessy. He says he does Ponseti, but it's not to a " T " . He told us to have Jaren wear the DBB 24/7 until he was a year old. He also said that he could quit using the DBB when he turned two. We kept them on until he was over 3. So just make sure that whomever you are seeing is REALLY following the Ponseti method and not deviating from it. As far as the moving around part, it will not stop her at all. Kids adapt so easily to just about everything. -Kim > > Hi everyone. Here's a little information about me. I have twin > girls who are a little over 3 months old. Guest guest
Kim: We see Dr. Stans at Mayo. I don't think he follows the Ponsetti Method to a " T " either, but that might just be for us because of Bella's dislocated hips. She'll have her hips surgically repaired at 6 months, and then she'll be in a cast that lifts her legs up and out for about 6-8 weeks. While she's in that cast she won't be able to wear the DBB, so I think the plan is to extend the hip cast to her toes so her feet can be turned out like they were with her other casts. Hopefully this will keep them corrected. He also said something about wearing the DBB only until 9 months, but I can't remember exactly. I know Ponsetti says wear it until the baby is 2- 4 years old. I'll have to ask him about that next time we see him. Thanks for your response. Sara > > > > Hi everyone. Here's a little information about me. Guest guest
Sara, Hopefully your doctor will be as willing to listen to your input as my son's doctor has been. We take him to Gillette in St. , and his doctor had mentioned releasing him from his shoes at 18 months (which he will be this week). I told her I wasn't comfortable with that and she was fine with it. I had been mentioning the extended wear, up to age 4, to her for quite some time. At Aleksander's last visit a few weeks ago, she said that Dr. Ponseti had increased the age and Aleksander should stay in the shoes until age 3 at a minimum. I guess sometimes parents get the information before the doctors, so be persistent. Aleksander, 11/24/04, bcf > > > > > > Hi everyone. Here's a little information about me. Good point, ee! I didn't mean to say that all twins should or will develop at exactly the same time just because mine did. I just think the fact that they did means that the clubfoot really didn't make any difference. I know other twins (without any medical problems) that have developed totally differently, the most extreme I think is with a colleague of mine where one boy could walk a full 6 months before his brother. I'm just really glad that that didn't happen with us, I'm sure I would have been worried otherwise. with (3.5y) and Alister (3.5y, right CF, Ponseti method UK) > New to the group and > I have a question > > > Hi everyone. Guest guest
Hi Sara~ Welcome to the group... you are going to really enjoy all the help and guidance you will get! I also have twin girls who are now almost 2 (6/24).... I was very concerned also about one of them developing sooner that the other and it has been so fun to see each one of them develop at their own pace.... they came 2 months early (born at 32 weeks) so the held off on the casting process until she came home at a month old.... as soon as we got her home we started the casting....she went once a week for 6 weeks then the tenotomy with another cast.... she then did the 23/7 for 2 months then we went wrong and dropped her hours to soon and she did relapse at about 6 months old....we didn't think we had another choice but to do surgery but then I found this wonderful group and they all highly encouraged me to recast and start all over....SO, I did....she was 9 months when we recasted ....it only took 3 casts to correct it that time then she went to the 23/7 for 2 months and gradually dropped down from there....and trust me we were very cautious when dropping hours that time.....we were so thankful that it worked and she didn't mind it at all....she learned how to crawl and stand and even walk behind her push toys with it on...these kids are amazing!!! I was concerned about starting over so late and her missing out on things.. (Avery has the club foot) Delaney did start walking several months before Avery but once Avery started walking she did great....she walked behind push toys for months but wouldn't stand alone...I am not sure if it is because of the club foot and DBB OR if it is because of being born early and it just taking time to develop....Delaney was always the stronger of the two!....It has been a blast to see them both develop because Delaney has always been more physical on climbing, walking ect..... then Avery has always been the first one to talk....but as soon as Avery started walking....Delaney starting talking....it was all within that same week!! It has been double the work (and then adding casts and shoes to that) but it has been double the fun now.... enjoy each step of the way because it is over so fast...I can't believe they are turning two!....Avery now sleeps with her shoes on and doesn't think a thing about it....it is never a problem putting them on and I hope she doesn't start getting upset because her sister doesn't need to wear them..... To protect the bar from hitting other things and especially her sister....we took a piece of pipe insulation and cut it from bolt to bolt and sliced it to slip over the bar.....remember that as she gets mobile...it really helps...it isn't pretty but we didn't care ....it was more to protect people and things....now she only sleeps with it so no one sees her.....we took black electrical tape and secured it...... If you ever have any questions ..especially about having the twins....I would be happy to try to help you!! I am actually in Chicago area....so not to far from you! Best of luck to you.... twobabygirls2006 wrote: Hi everyone. Here's a little information about me. I have twin girls who are a little over 3 months old. Guest guest
Hello Sara. I am so glad to see the positive responses to your question. I had twin boys in November and Evan has bilateral club feed and what appeared to be a dislocated hip (turned out to only be abnormal muscle/tissue development that was " stretched " back to neutral). The problem for him was that he was too small to be casted right away, so we had to wait until he was 7-8 lbs, which took about three months. We started the brace a few weeks ago, but he got a sore that we had to let heal and he was re-casted. He gets the casts off in a week and he will start the bracing process again. Anyway, he goes into the brace 23/7 at 6 months old. So, I, too, am worried about his development with respect to rolling over, crawling, etc. I figure he has a 3 year old sister and a twin brother to keep up with, so he'll do whatever it takes!! But, am glad to see that the brace is generally a non-issue. Keep in touch to let me know how it goes. I'll do the same. Jennie twobabygirls2006 wrote: Hi everyone.
