Hang in there Mom!

I know it must be really hard for you.

For the first time - you aren't there to protect her and make sure she

is ok. She'll survive in spite of everything and it will all be over before

you know it.

my motto : This will all be a memory soon, This will all be a memory soon!

(that is what I keep repeating to myself when i feel overwhelmed or in an

extreme situation - like getting ready for my c-section or something - but

truly - it does work for me.)

Maybe you could take this time to make a little journal for her or something

Write some of the happiest moments you remember or cute things she did

when she was a baby or a little kid or even recently. maybe write all the

wonderful things you feel about her now. That way when she comes home,

she'll know how much you missed her and how much you were thinking

about her. something like that. Just a thought

Take care

Dawn

I just called 's cottage again to find out how she did on her first

night there. From what they have told me, it sounds as if she's still

having problems completely adjusting. She's not eating, but we had warned

them that she was an extremely picky eater. She has also refused to take

her medicine. But she did go to school and took a walk with her 'advocate'

(all new kids are assigned an adult to be with them one on one). I gave

them some suggestions as to what she would eat and reminded them that this

was her first time away from home. And after I hung up the phone, I figured

out a possible reason why she wouldn't take her medicine. It's probably

because she doesn 't like water and would only take it with ginger ale when

she was at home.

I hope things improve once she gets used to the place.

Thanks Dawn,

You pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as my not being able to

protect her now (though I do have confidence in the staff at this place).

I'm just so used to not only 'protecting' her and making sure she's ok, but

also acting as an 'intepreter' between her and 'the world'.

I'm hopeful that thing will get better once she gets used to being there.

This is her first time away from home (except when she was hospitalized in

February), so I knew there would be an adjustment period. Right now, my

biggest concern is that she's not drinking (in addition to not eating), but

I hope that they are able to get her some ginger ale since that is pretty

much all she would drink at home. They are also going to try a few

suggestions I gave them (cereal, chips) to get her to eat something, but I

suspect that it may be more 'nerves' than anything else right now. (though

she is normally a very picky eater)

On the bright side, she is talking to her advocate (though the lady has to

keep asking questions to get her to say anything to her) and she did

go to school this morning (they have less than a week of summer classes).

And I did tell her advocate this evening that this was 's first time

away from home, so I hope that she can use that information to help

adjust.

Patti, Patti, I totally understand your anxiety over how is adjusting

there, just please note it is only her second day.... give her time, and give

the staff time, it sounds to me like she IS going to adjust pretty well in a

while...

Dawn,

I'm not too worried about her coming back skin and bones since she is very

overweight right now (she's 5'3 and about 190 lbs). My biggest worry is her

not drinking since that can cause dehydration.

About 's age - you pretty much nailed it. She will be 13 on the 30th

of this month (August).

We hope that she will spend 2 years at this place (the maximum she can since

they only go up to 9th grade). She needs to work on a lot of issues (eating

being only one).

Thanks Again

Thanks Fania,

I know that this is an adjustment period for her. I'd be less worried,

though, if I knew she was at least drinking something.

Hi Patti,

I know how hard it is to leave your child in somebody else's care ! was

in residential care for four months, two hours away from us. He is also a non

water drinker. It took him a week to settle into the routine where he was, but

did great. Now don't get me wrong, he had his moments, but it was the best

thing we did for him! He even gets along with his brothers now. He did not

always like the food either, but did not starve. Having his own bedding from

home helped him along with having pictures of the family. Other family members

wrote to him and that made him feel good also. When I would go to see him for

our therapy sessions every week I would take him something to eat that he

enjoyed, that he didn't get there. He was not allowed to have food to keep,

just something to eat for our little visit after our session. My heart goes out

to both of you, it is hard to be away from each other, but worth it in the long

run. I'm sending lots of hugs and prayers your way!

If you ever need to ask questions you can email me off list. Hang in there!

Dawn... Were you speaking at the time? I was in Mexicali yesterday. There were no nurses that were so tired they could literally stand up, inject a drug, and fall asleep. I would have to question how that could be done anyway. I've injected a river of drugs in IV lines and there is no way I could stand up, inject, and be asleep. That would be quite a trick. This is silly, it's time to stop the nonsense.dawn <dawn9368@...> wrote: well, im sitting in the hospital. took a shower. my stomach feels weird. The nurse fell asleep?? That pressure in your chest will ease up and you will be able to burp, swelliing from the surgery most likely. Hope your doing ok, get out and walk as much as you can..:-) Dana

Then, it would be best to contact Nina. She has direct

conections to the hospital. If this is going on, it

will not be tolerated. I know that she does not want

this happening to the patience.

We are not trying to be mean, but to be honest, we

have not encounted anything like this with out trips

to the hospital.

I have to agree with , I never experienced this at all when I was

there. It's not to say it cannot happen, but it's very odd that it

has. I'd talk to Nina or Yolanda about the situation, see what they

can do for you. I've experienced nothing but great help when I was

there, and this is really the first that any of us have heard of

this...and that's being honest. I wish you the best of luck! I felt

the same way with my stomach feeling gassy and wanting to burp, it

will go away.

Dawn... Honestly, your stories just don't add up. They didn't add up well yesterday and they aren't adding up today. Yesterday you wrote to us about what happened and when the other side of the story came out it was a very different version. Today you claim that a nurse fell asleep twice while injecting your IV. I am a nurse and I'm here to tell you it is absolutely impossible to stand and sleep while injecting an IV. He was likely there for less than three minutes and he fell asleep twice? Every 90 seconds he was falling asleep? Awww, com'on. Remember, I was at Almater yesterday and I saw the nurses. I'm here to tell you that none of them were tired in the way that would be necessary to fall asleep injecting an IV. Besides, he would have fallen down if he fell asleep, you wouldn't have needed to clear your throat to "startle" him. Keep in mind, the drugs

they use in your IV must be injected very slowly as to not burn a little. He may have been counting seconds, I've done that myself! In Mexico men are very different from men here. They are more "gentleman" like. Perhaps you were exposed and he was trying to be polite by closing his eyes. I can see various scenarios but I just can't believe he was falling asleep. People are trying to give you the benefit of the doubt by suggesting it is the drugs causing the stories you have told us thus far. If the truth be known, isn't it true that you have been looking for things to be wrong since you got there? I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to get to the truth. Yesterday you felt nobody talked all the way to San Diego. Your van-mates disagree. You felt Ernesto was not there to meet you at the airport, come to find out that isn't accurate

either. He was there 15 minutes after your plane arrived but you were not really following the directions given to you - to stay in the baggage area. He was looking for you but you weren't where you were supposed to be. The people around you have a very different version of what has been going on. Today you claim that while STANDING a nurse fell asleep TWICE within a few minutes time while ACTIVELY injecting your IV. You know what I think? I think you are in Mexico, a country different from your own where the language isn't even your own. I think you are a little freaked out about being alone. Not only are you alone in a different country but you are getting surgery. That's a *really* spooky thing for some people and rightfully so. We don't know the culture, the ways of doing things, how everything is going to work, and I think the anxiety of everything

combined is getting to you and you merely want to reach out to us but perhaps you aren't really sure how to do that. Darl'en, all you have to do is reach out. Just tell us you are alone in Mexico getting surgery and it's upsetting you. We will ALL understand and relate to that. We will hold your cyber hand, we will comfort you in every possible way, and we will do anything we can for you but when you tell these stories it tends to push people away and honestly, I think you need people right now. I think you are shooting yourself in the foot instead of reaching out and asking for a hand. If you haven't received your dinner yet just push the call light and ask a nurse for your food. Waaahhlahhhh, it will be there. I promise. Those call lights are there for a reason and it's completely and totally okay to use it. Dr. Aceves will be in, Dr. Campos will be in,

will likely be in, Yolanda was likely there earlier... ask any of them to help you get your Jello. I'm very sure they will be most happy to help. Take care, Bipleydawn <dawn9368@...> wrote: im sorry that you think i was on drugs, but this man dozed off twice. i was very wide awake because i cleared my throat twice to startle him. there is myself and a man named jeff across the hall and as of 730pm neither of us have gotten broth or nothing. Dawn-

I really have to question them falling asleep while standing there?

You should have a call button- if you need broth, water, etc use that

to call someone. The whole time I was there Yolanda or the dr's were

coming and going checking on us too. What you are describing does not

seem like the care anyone else received there.

Hi Dawn -

I just had my surgery on January 31st with Dr. Aceves. I have been reading the posts on this board for quite some time now and have not felt the need to reach out and respond to anyone, until now. I am absolutely shocked at the condescending treatment you are receiving from some of the "bandsters" on this board and it sounds to me like some of them have lost more than just pounds and inches- they've lost basic human compassion as well.

My experience in Mexico was so-so. Dr. A and his team were great - especially Yolanda. But I think that the language barrier with some of the other hospital staff affected my care. It seemed as though I had to ask for things repeatedly before getting a response but again that could have been because they didn’t understand what I was asking of them. Thank God I had my husband with me who speaks fluent Spanish otherwise I think I would have been SOL.

Come on now. Do you honestly believe that could happen? Be logical! Don't let this one "story" scare you away. Listen to all the other people. How many others have ever had such an experience? Could all of those things honestly have happened to just one person? Wouldn't there have been a pattern??? Don't believe everything you read. Jennidaymkr05 <DStu98@...> wrote: ok this is scaring me. and a nurse fell asleep????? I am so nervous as it is...now this??

Dawn, No one said you can't express negative feelings on this board. Many of us have done that from time to time. We have all been through a life-changing experience and we have all had to say farewell to our lifelong best friend...food! However, I honestly find it hard to believe that ALL of this happened to just one person! And then there are the accounts from the other patients who were there at the same time that are almost opposite of your descriptions. How does that work? I know you were miserable being there by yourself because you told all of us that before you even went. I'm sorry you had to go alone....I'm sure that could have been pretty terrifying. Perhaps that can even change your entire perspective of the whole expereince. Maybe you really aren't ready for the emotional changes that we have to be willing to make to be successful in our new lifestyles. I hope

that your life gets better once you get home and I wish you much success. Please don't let your negativity carry on and on and on. Attitude is so important in this journey. It isn't a perfect journey by any means but learn to focus on the positive rather than looking for the negative. Don't push everyone here away from you because if you are anything like the rest of us who hang out on here, we all NEED one another. Your negative attitude is going to do you more damage than good in the long run. Take a deep breath, relax, and find the joy in this journey! Keep in touch. I think we all need to have some compassion for this girl. She was probably

scared and over analizing everything. Maybe he was counting while injecting

meds. I know when I try to get a heart rate while working out I need to closr my

eyes to count. There are too many distractions for me. He might have opened his

eyes when you cleared you throat because you startled him. Who knows. Has Nina

or any of the A team asked the nurse yet? As far as your van ride down. Maybe

you were nervous. Evertime I have gone to Mexico or anyother place where there

are bandster. We have alyways been able to spark up a conversation. I am sure

that there was occasional silence. It is more that a 2 hour drive. I hope that

you are doing better now. Do not get offened by anyones comments on the board.

We are all passionate people and have a strong love for our Dr. Speak truely and

reflect on your experience. Make the best of this new adjustment time. It can

still be very emotional. Best of Luck

Kira
