Guest guest
Hi My son was weighed with the casts on. They figured the casts wouldn't weigh that much difference each week. Then when he had his casts off they just weighed him without and started at a new point. It is only to check that they are going up and not down. They can take blood if they need to from anywhere I should think. My son didn't get casted till he was 9 days old so all his blood had been done that needed to be done. Cheers Rach, Steve and Connor age 3, b/l c/f -- Pediatrician Visits Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had advice for when the baby has to go to a newborn visit and they are casted???What if they need to get blood, how do they do weight, etc??? Guest guest
my son had to be tested for increased bilirubin level at 5 weeks old and he still had cast on. They pricked his fingers instead of his heel. The lab tech even said they may have to draw blood from his arm. As far as weighing him as said before the cast doesn't put that much more weight on so they would just weigh him with his cast on. hope that is some help. good luck. frogabog wrote: do the weight checks at the ortho when baby is out of casts and take that info to the ped. Guest guest
Our ped just weighed her with the casts on each time, and then started fresh once she was out of the casts. The blood tests were done in her arm if necessary, and that only happened once in the hospital. Hope that helps. - Michele 5/18/02 and Maddie 9/6/05 bcf s 14/7 babywithclubfoot wrote: Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had advice for when the baby has to go to a newborn visit and they are casted???What if they need to get blood, how do they do weight, etc??? __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi there. If the pediatrician really needs to get blood, he/she can get it from the top of the hand/wrist. As far as the weighing, they can weigh with the cast on and you can ask the ortho approx. how much the casts weigh. My pediatrician's nurse always just put down the weight with the cast on and noted the cast was on at the time. The cast really doesn't weigh more than about 5-6 ounces when it's dry (it weighs more in the first 24 hours while it's still wet). So they can just estimate the weight. It's not an exact science. I was worried about all these things too and it turned out I was making a bigger deal of it than it really was. The nurse and doctor really didn't seem to care one way or another about the cast being on during weighing or blood draws. Also, with the vaccines, we just post-poned his first set of shots until he came out of the casts at just over 2 months (first set isn't due until 2 months of age anyway). babywithclubfoot wrote: Hi there, I was wondering if anyone had advice for when the baby has to go to a newborn visit and they are casted???What if they need to get blood, how do they do weight, etc??? Guest guest
Bring the previous week's casts with you at the next ped. appt. and have them weigh the casts first. Then you can kinda tell how much weight the casts are adding to your baby's total weight. In our experience, the cast weight about 4-6 ounces. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Ok, , now this is just downright brilliant! I wish I had asked you when Lily was a new munchkin. > > Bring the previous week's casts with you at the next ped. appt. and have them weigh the casts first. Guest guest
the casting phase is so brief - a matter of a few weeks - you'll find it's really not a huge issue and soon no issue at all s Re: Pediatrician Visits Hi there. Guest guest
We had our first newborn visit before heading for Iowa City - they weighed Zach then (obviously before casting). Prior to heading to Iowa we had jaundice issues, where they had to prick his heel, had to use the bili blanket (fun - let me tell you) etc. but luckily that was taken care of before we left at five days old - thankfully, our ped. sent us to Iowa City although Zach's bilirubin (sp?) levels weren't as low as she would like for them to be - we just kept a close eye on his coloring, and his poop - LOL. Once in Iowa City, at each cast change, they would weigh him without the cast, so we had an accurate weight gain every few days. Right before we left with the fifth and final cast, they did a weigh-in for us - and we didn't have another until after the last cast was removed. > > Hi there, > > I was wondering if anyone had advice for when the baby has to go to a > newborn visit and they are casted???What if they need to get blood, > how do they do weight, etc??? >
