Guest guest
Hi , Just throwin out a quick thought here........there have recently been 2 moms here who's children also were having difficulties walking at around 's age and in both cases, after tubes were inserted in their ears, they were soooo much better!! I guess that their equalibruim was way off because of issues with their inner ears...can you believe it?! So, I would definately get his ears checked, it's worth a shot! > > Hi all, > My son will be turning 2 years old next month. His feet are pretty good, but his gross motor progress has been very slow. He still looks like a toddler who has just learned to walk. He is very stiff legged, and he has almost NO balance. He struggles so much with walking on uneven surfaces. We took him to the beach the other day, and he had SUCH a hard time walking, that he just took to crawling instead. By 2 years old, a child should be pretty confident on their feet. I really worry about him, and wondered if it was normal, and if they do catch up in the end? > > Thanks. > > > and 6/24/04 bcf s 14/7 > > > --------------------------------- > Yahoo! Guest guest
, My daughter is one of the ones that had tubes and then almost immediately began walking. I'm not saying her delays were entirely related to her equilibrium being off, because they were not, but once she got ready to walk, that is what stopped her. I didn't even know she had ear infections because she has such a high tolerance for pain, but when I took her to the ENT they said she had so much fluid in her ears that she had a 50% hearing loss. She was at that point able to push a walker, but could not even stand unassisted. That may not be your sons problem, but it is worth looking into. Also worth looking into is getting him evaluated by early intervention. They will be able to tell if there are any problems that therapy would help with. Good luck!! Guest guest
, It took awhile before my son mastered walking. He took his first steps at 15mos, and didn't run until he was 2 1/2. He is also on the clutzy side. His legs always have bruises on his legs from tripping. As far as the beach goes, has always and still has a hard time walking on sand. I fugure it stretches parts of his feet that aren't used to being stretched. He will complain of his feet aching within 10mins of being at the beach. also had tubes in his ears and barely passed his hearing test before tubes. He got tubes shortly before he started to walk. He also didn't talk until he got tubes. Best wishes. mom to (5/25/02 bilateral cf, just got out of casts from residual MA) > > Hi all, > My son will be turning 2 years old next month. Guest guest
You know, I wonder if he has some issues unrelated to the club feet. My second child, who doesn't have club feet, had motor delays and was very " clumsy " for a long time while walking. We got him services through our state's early intervention program and he is doing well now at almost six years old. The services should be free or very cheap and the local health department should be able to help you find your local program. Your son might benefit from physical or occupational therapy for a time. Guest guest
has been having therapy with the early intervention since he was 11 months old, because I noticed delays very early on. He started crawling around 11 1/2 months, and walked at 17 1/2 months. Since then his progress has continued to be delayed, and I just wondered if other clubfoot babies had similar problems. Maybe it is not because of his clubfeet, but I wonder what else there is that I can do for him, and when I can expect him to catch up. Thanks for the extra input. I will have to check things out with the pediatrician when he has his 2 year old checkup. Carol Shelton wrote: You know, I wonder if he has some issues unrelated to the club feet. Guest guest
- You mention that your son receives EI therapy-what does his therapist have to say about this? My son began walking at 18 months as well and now at 21 months he is beginning to master the uneven surfaces. He doesn't particularly like walking in grass or on sand or on the mulch playground surface but we take him out there each day to get him used to it. His therapist suggested this so that his body becomes accustomed to it. I would talk to his therapist and point it out to him/her-maybe they can focus their attention on this particular skill for a while. I often watch david's classmates at daycare and do notice that " normal " ortho kids have problems too with the uneven surfaces. However, I never doubt my mommy instincts!! hth, kathleen mom to david bcf fab 12/7 and baby daughter edd 9/1/06 > > Hi all, > My son will be turning 2 years old next month.
