Guest guest
Hello Behnaz. Don't let the whole idea of clubfoot scare you. The Ponseti method is the absolute best treatment for clubfeet. The young doctor you saw who said she uses the Ponseti method...is she certified in the method? Many doctors claim to use the method, but modify it to their own benefit. Many times, the treatment fails because of these modifications. When used and done correctly, the Ponseti method is 98% effective. It is a true miracle seeing the transformation. Surgery usually only leads to stiffness and pain in the feet later in life. Here is a list of qualified doctors in the Ponseti method. Also, I am attaching a link to more info on the method. Best of luck to you and your son. If you would like, I can send a link so you can see the treatment process my son went through. Guest guest
Hello, Behnaz and Nima! We are so glad that you found our group! You can absolutely trust the young doctor if she is using the Ponseti method. She is right as almost 100% of feet can be completely corrected without major reconstructive surgery if the doctor is following the method exactly as Dr. Ponseti developed it. There is a very small procedure needed to lengthen the Achilles tendon for about 80-85% of the children, called a percutaneous tenotomy, it can be completed in a doctor's office under local anesthesia. While the French physiotherapy methods (either DiMeglio or Bensahel) are well known, the Ponseti method, developed by Dr. Ignacio Ponseti in Iowa City, is equally well known, and perhaps even more well known in recent years. The young female doctor likely studied under Dr. Shafique Pirani (or maybe Norgrove Penny) from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, as he is very involved in training sessions for doctors all over the world (most notably Uganda and India). There are hundreds of children here who have been successfully treated without surgery. There are thousands world-wide. Dr. Ponseti has patients who are in their 40's and 50's and they have perfectly functioning and pain free feet. He also has numerous long term medical studies to prove this. There are a number of other doctors world wide who now have completed their own medical studies at their own facilities to further prove that Dr. Ponseti's method, when used correctly, works well. Here is the link to Dr. Ponseti's website: http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/medicaldepartments/orthopaedics/cl ubfeet/index.html Here is a link to a site where you can find many links to many different websites regarding the method: http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil Here is a link to a site that has a technical booklet available for free in a number of different languages that explains how the method works: http://global-help.org Please take a look in the photos and links sections on this group's webpage because you will see pictures of our kids and their beautifully corrected feet and you will be assured this can be achieved without surgery! I will also place my daughter's website below and under the photo gallery, you can see pictures of her clubfoot from birth until age 5. She is 6 now, and she has no problems at all! I hope this helps you! Please let us know if you have any questions or need any more information! Guest guest
behnaz, welcome to this group from so far across the globe! I realize we come from different cultures and so we have different ideas about some things, but I would really urge you to listen to the young female doctor despite her age. The Ponseti Method is highly successful, as much as 95% successful. I have two sons with club feet who were treated with this Ponseti Method. One son only needed five casts changed every five days; the other son only needed four casts, changed every five days. It's a very quick but highly effective treatment for babies. Surgery has a lot of risks, as you probably know...being put to sleep, the risk of infections, etc., but also, surgery has been shown to less effective over the long term. The child may look and feel corrected after the surgery but in months and years later as the baby's foot grows, often many surgery-related problems arise that require more surgery to repair. In many cases it turns in to a very ugly cycle of operations. I hope you can find lots of information about th Ponseti Method that will answer your questions and ease your worries. The Ponseti Method has been used for half a century in the USA with wonderul results! good luck! shawnee please help me hello my name is behnaz and i am from Iran , my son " Nima " now is 2 month years old .he was born with club feet.when i saw his feet I was shocked , we started to take brace when he was 5 days. now my problem is that the dr said I should surgery his feet when he will be 6 mounths, he told us club feet will not treated with out surgery. Guest guest
Hi Behnaz, Congratulations to your son! I'd say, definitely try the Ponseti doctor first. You could ask her how long she's been using the Ponseti method, and what her success rate without surgery is (should be around 95%). My son was treated with the Ponseti method and his foot is perfect (he had only one clubfoot). I can only recommend it (see also http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/medicaldepartments/orthopaedics/clubfeet/pare\ nts.html). He was our doctor's first baby to be treated with the Ponseti method. I figured that if it didn't look right after a couple of weeks we could always switch then, but she did a great job. I emailed Dr Ponseti some pictures as well and he said his feet looked well corrected. I think you can't go wrong with trying the Ponseti method first, you can always have surgery afterwards if absolutely necessary, but not the other way round. I know there are quite a few doctors that are 'famous' for clubfoot surgery but this is slowly changing and more and more doctors are now using the non-surgical Ponseti method instead. I think the main problem with surgery is the long-term outcome which might be arthritis and pain, and usually the child has to have more surgeries later on. Anyway, I hope it'll turn out all right for you. with (3.5y) and Alister (3.5y, right CF, Ponseti method, UK) --- behnaz hajisadeghi wrote: > hello > > my name is behnaz and i am from Iran , my son > " Nima " now is 2 month years old .he was born with > club feet.when i saw his feet I was shocked , we > started to take brace when he was 5 days. now my > problem is that the dr said I should surgery his > feet when he will be 6 mounths, he told us club feet > will not treated with out surgery. > I took my son to other doctor she said I treat > your son whit ponseti method , my problem is that I > cant trust to her beacouse she is young and doesnt > have enough expreaience she took her specialist from > canada.and the doctor who said club feet isn treat > with out surgery took his specialist from france , > he is very famous in club foot treatment . he take > brace for 6 mounth and then made a surgery then take > brace for 3 month. > so please help me and give me suggestion that what > should i do. > thank you and forgive me if my english isnot very > good , I tried to explain every thing > > behnaz > > > > --------------------------------- > New Yahoo! Guest guest
Behnaz, I would encourage you to have your son treated with the Ponseti method first before considering a surgical alternative. With the Ponseti method, it will only take a couple of months to have the feet in the corrected position. Then there will be no need to do the surgery. In many countries where the Ponseti method is introduced, the younger doctors are often the ones who introduce the Ponseti method to that country. There were some parents from Tehran here on this web site in 2003- 2004 that had an e-mail address of finnroos @ yahoo.com. At that time, the Ponseti method was not available in Tehran and they traveled to New Zealand for treatment. The parents from Tehran left a lot of messages here back in early 2003 including the following link. Perhaps you can e-mail them for some local advise. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/message/13577 The Ponseti method is becoming the mainstream method of treatment for clubfoot in the U.S., Europe and is increasingly available in different parts of the Middle East. Dr. Mark Sinclair, who helped to establish the Ponseti method in Germany, is now in Dubai. http://www.dbaj.ae/en/content/our_doctors_sinclaire.asp There was a presentation on the Ponseti method held in Bahrain last December 2005 as a part of the combined meetings of the Gulf Coast Countrys and Pan Arab Orthopedic Associations. http://www.gccorthopaedic.org/index2.htm Best wishes for your son. and (born March 17, 1999) Our son's story can be seen at http://www.uihealthcare.com/topics/medicaldepartments/orthopaedics/cl ubfeet/egbert.html > > hello > > my name is behnaz and i am from Iran , my son " Nima " now is 2 month years old .he was born with club feet.when i saw his feet I was shocked , we started to take brace when he was 5 days. now my problem is that the dr said I should surgery his feet when he will be 6 mounths, he told us club feet will not treated with out surgery. > I took my son to other doctor she said I treat your son whit ponseti method , my problem is that I cant trust to her beacouse she is young and doesnt have enough expreaience she took her specialist from canada.and the doctor who said club feet isn treat with out surgery took his specialist from france , he is very famous in club foot treatment . he take brace for 6 mounth and then made a surgery then take brace for 3 month. > so please help me and give me suggestion that what should i do. > thank you and forgive me if my english isnot very good , I tried to explain every thing > > behnaz > > > > --------------------------------- > New Yahoo! Guest guest
Hi Behnaz, Welcome to the group! Since I knew from a sonogram that I would have a baby with club feet I was able to research treatments for it. Over and over again I kept reading about the Ponseti method of non surgical correction so before our baby was born I knew that was the treatment I wanted. It has a very high success rate when done properly and the babies who are treated do not have pain, scars and arthritis in their early years like the babies who receive surgery. I believe that in time the Ponseti method will have reached most of the doctors in the world and have become the preferred method of treating club feet because of the great success rate. Hope that helps you. Please do some research and I think that it will persuade you that the Ponseti method is the best correction for club feet. Guest guest
Behnaz- I want to mention that I recently read an article regarding a doctor practicing the Ponseti Method in Dubai. He used to practice in Germany, and from what I have read on this group, his patients speak very highly of him. I did some looking around and his name is Dr. Marc Sinclair. I have traveled to Dubai quite frequently, so when I read this article, I was very interested. His offices are in the Emirates Towers, only about 15 minutes or so from the airport. Here is the link to the news article: deficiencies. His main focus however, has been the Correction of Limb deformities, especially by usage of External Fixation such as the Ilizarov and Spatial Frame System. Dr. Sinclair has a strong interest in the correction of Pediatric foot deformities. He regularly presents papers at international meetings concerning the Ponseti treatment for Clubfoot Deformity and has organized several meetings and workshops in Europe and Asia. Pediatric Spinal Deformities, such as congenital and idiopathic scoliosis, hip pathologies in the child and Pediatric Trauma are equally part of Dr. Sinclair's special interest. If you have more questions, please ask. You have a lot of people here ready to help! Guest guest
Behnaz and Nima- Welcome to the group. You have received lots of wonderful advice. I would like to reiterate that you can always do surgery. HOwever, once surgery is done-you can't go back!! So why not take a chance on the young doctor-ask her if she has any current patients that you may be able to talk to(well their parents)-find out who she worked under in canada-there are some great ponseti method doctors in canada! If you discover that the method is not working, then you can always go back to the other doctor. I hope you have looked at the global health booklet on the ponseti method as it details out how the whole procedure works. I have witnessed the miracle that this method does in my own son who is now 20 months old, surgery free, and runs around. His favorite activity is to play on the playground with all his friends! take care, keep us informed and welcome, kathleen mom to david bcf fab 12/7 ps your english is perfect!!! > > hello > > my name is behnaz and i am from Iran , my son " Nima " now is 2 month years old .he was born with club feet.when i saw his feet I was shocked , we started to take brace when he was 5 days. now my problem is that the dr said I should surgery his feet when he will be 6 mounths, he told us club feet will not treated with out surgery. Guest guest
Hi Behnaz, Welcome to the group. I highly recommend and encourage you to try the Ponseti method. Your baby is still so young. To start the treatment now would give your baby a good start to having fully corrected feet WITHOUT surgery. You've already received such good advice from the other parents so I won't preach too much. Believe me, your baby is very fortunate to have a doctor near by who uses the Ponseti technique. If you have any other questions, please, please ask anytime and we will answer. Let us know how what you decide. Good luck with everything. mommy to -J'nee, bcf, born 01.07.06, FAB 23/7 > > hello > > my name is behnaz and i am from Iran , my son " Nima " now is 2 month years old .he was born with club feet.when i saw his feet I was shocked , we started to take brace when he was 5 days. now my problem is that the dr said I should surgery his feet when he will be 6 mounths, he told us club feet will not treated with out surgery.
