Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I'm glad that there is evidently something appropriate on the horizon - sounds like it might be something like what Charissa is in. Don't you wonder, sometimes, how they *ever* come up with those crazy titles?!? Here there is a program for more severly disabled students called ACT (I forget what it stands for......) The program Charissa is in is called ACE, which stands for Alternative Career Education. Half of their day is spent in " community-based vocational services " (on the job training), which often leads right into a job. The staff has worked with over 100 businesses in town, and try to match the student with a career, not just a brainless job. They have to interview with the job-site coordinator at the school at least twice a year for placement - a REAL interview, taken very seriously. And when entering the program they develop a resume, which they have to update regularly. In addition to career services, they work on all types of activities for independant community living, including public transportation and recreation. They all have to get their drivers' permit, even if they do not intend to get their license, so they are aware of what being a safe driver is (and what to do if you are riding with an unsafe driver). There is alot more, but I think you get the idea. The staff is wonderful, Charissa has made alot of new friends, and I can't imagine a better place for her right now! They come and describe what they offer at that meeting and then in the fall will begin evaluating and advising Max. I don't remember the name, but I know I freaked when I heard it. The case manager told me not to worry, that the name sounds worse than it is. It sounded like something for people who just can't do anything besides count bolts or work on an assemblyline. She said that is NOT what it is and that they will do well by Max. We will see. I guess we have to go through it first and then let everyone know how it goes. I'll just put off that worry until June.
