,

I have a glucometer that my endo. gave me, although I

have to confess that I don't use it as much as they

want me to (I don't think they trust that I know my

body as well as I do). I got a lesson from a nurse at

the endo.'s office when they gave me mine, so you'll

hopefully get the same thing. As far as testing

sites, I usually use the side of my finger (NEVER the

pad b/c touching things all day can make the area

sore), but given Emerence's age, I'm not sure that

would be the best site. I would definitely ask the

endo. if you can. I can also tell you that it doesn't

hurt as much as you think it would...really, I

promise. It stings for about two seconds, but that's

it. She might be more frightened by the sight of the

blood than she will be in pain from the needle. Let

me know if I can elaborate on anything else in regards

to the glucometer (or anything else, for that matter

<grin>).

Isaac's endo gave us a glucometer when he was hospitalized last

month. They were checking his blood sugar every for hours for 7 days

and they always did it on his toes. They looked so awful because the

always did it on the side instead of the middle and there were at

least 6 or 7 holes on each toe. One of the nurses gave me a tip. She

said to take a diaper and run it under warm water then attach it to

the foot. Wait a few minutes and then remove the diaper and poke.

Isaac was asleep when she did this and he didn't even cry when she

stuck him. The warmth makes the capillaries (spelling?) expand and

the blood goes to the surface. I still have a hard time checking his

sugar but he gets over it very quickly..

Good Luck!

Keep in mind that diabetic children check themselves from 5-12 times

a day using a glucometer. I remind of that all the time.

It is really important that parents keep this very " light " with the

kids, because if we act squeamish, the kids think it hurts more than

it does. I tested myself and it truly is a tiny pinprick. And

's friend Madison, diabetic and age 9, says that you " just

get used to it. " Good luck! Jenn

Hi,

I use Coby's toes. It really does NOT hurt them. I have been using

Coby's toes since he was a baby and he wouldn't even flinch. Even now

he just sits there while I do it. I don't have to hold him or

anything, like I do for his GH shot.

It really isn't bad. It's just one of those things you worry about

until you try it the first time and then you will be fine, promise!
