Guest guest
Hi Rosie- An endoscopy is when a doctor takes a long tube with a tiny camera on the end and puts it down your throat (you are under sedation when it happens...not painful at all). The procedure is required by some surgeons, but not all. They take a biopsy looking for a bacteria called H. Pylori and if you have it you will be placed on antibiotics for 2 weeks to get rid of it. This procedure also looks at your duodenum and all around to make sure everything looks ok...and can also look for ulcers or hiatal hernias. My surgeon just wants to make sure everything is fine. A benefit of this procedure is that it stretches your esophogus which can help swallowing etc. H.Pylori can be detected in a blood test, but certain surgeons just want to look around your esophogus and duodenum before the surgery. I hope this helps. Take care,
