Guest guest
Hello, Not sure how old Weston is and whether these suggestions will work or not.... when we were in Iowa City in April we had our 7 year old with us too and he really enjoyed the Children's muesuem at the Coralville mall (I really enjoyed the mall! Nice stores and nice food court). There is also an NHL size ice rink inside the mall. There was also a fossil gorge about 10 miles away from the campus where a flood about 10 years ago washed away land to reveal an flossilized ocean floor.....pretty cool! Our activities were geared more around what a 7 year old would enjoy! We also so information about a natural history mueseum on campus....i think it was free and looked very interesting....we just ran out of time. Guest guest
I am taking Weston to see Dr. Ponseti next week. We will likely need to be there for 3-4 weeks. I will only have a rental car for the first week. After that I plan on using the Cambus. Can anyone recommend some things for us to do? I'm afraid I'm going to be bored and lonely so far from home. Guest guest
More people will pipe in-especially ee since she just spent 3 weeks in Iowa city with advice on what to do there. From what I understand(since i haven'tbeen there) is that there is a nice mall with a carousel horse inside that the kids seem to go for. The beauty of the RMD house(if you are staying there) is that there is usually always activity around the house. The volunteers are usually very good at giving suggestions as to what to do. I have not been to Iowa city and I thought we had a file or link to things to do while you are there but I couldn't find it!! However, I know the many families who have gone will surely pipe in with suggestions!! Good luck again and keep us posted! kathleen mom to david bcf fab 12/7 20 mo old > > I am taking Weston to see Dr. Ponseti next week. We will likely need > to be there for 3-4 weeks. Guest guest
If you like to shop- there's an outlet mall about 20 miles west right on the interstate. It's a good size so if it's nice out that first week, that's an option. Jenn > > I am taking Weston to see Dr. Ponseti next week. We will likely need > to be there for 3-4 weeks. Guest guest
A little loney maybe, but Iowa City is such a nice and friendly town! Am I mistaken gang? Is there a link to IC attractions? I thought there was. We love going to the Natural History Museum to visit the giant sloth. IT's a must see! lol The cambus that says " Pentacrest " takes you down down to the block known as " the Pentacrest " , that is where the museum is, and the old capitol building. Just a block from there (ask someone maybe for which way to walk) is the " Ped Mall " a section of closed off streets bricked over for sidewalks with tons of shops, street musicians, play ground...also right there across from the Pentacrest is the Old Capitol Mall - a small indoor mall with shops and an Osco Drug if you need any personal supplies, film, photo, etc. The cambus that says " Hospital Fink Arena " takes you to the Pappa South Enterance of the hospital where you need to go see Dr. Ponseti. The bus will drop you off and when you get off turn to your right, look for the hospital wall that says " Iowa Children's Hospital " real big in colorful letters up on the wall. Walk towards that andand go around the building to your right, so the building is on your left. Clear as mud? haha You'll understand when you see it. - aim for that. If you are standing under the Iowa Children's Hospital sign facing the building, you'd turn right, go a few steps and turn left... there'll be like a walk-way bridge going over you at that point and a parking garage on your right across the street - anyway, that is the side wehre you find the door that goes in to where you need to go. Either go down the stairs right there inside that door, or take that elevator to LL (lower level), they open up to your registration desk and Clinic C. Hope some of that helps you find your way there on the bus. The same bus will take you back (Hospital Fink Arena) Also, the RMD often has volunteer people come in to cook dinner or do activities with the children. They are there to HELP, all the volunteers are so really dn't hesitate to ask one of them for help, like to hold the baby a minute while you stir your pot of soup on the stove or whatever. They'll help you get a vacuum sweeper to your room if your hands or full...I mean what ever, they make it really easy for you! I was there with all three kids and one day a young volunteer girl said she finished her work adn was bored...! Aaahhh! I told her my kids would love to go play frisby. She went out with them for two hours, and lots of other kids that were there joined in, it was great to have the peace for a while. And not to discourage you in any way, but a time or two I've been there, there's been a family or two who were really rude acting...so if anyone give you any grief, making noise at night, being messy, bothering you...just go quietly talk it over with the manager and they'll take care of it so you don't have to confront that person. I'm so glad you are going!!!!! shawnee Iowa City visit I am taking Weston to see Dr. Ponseti next week. We will likely need to be there for 3-4 weeks. Guest guest
The Corralville mall has the carosel (sp?). And there are city-busses that go there but I cannot tell you which one. It's a secret. hahahah just joking, I'm not sure how the city bus system works. If a volunteer will drive you there though it's fun, a Children's Museum there too and ice rink. s. Guest guest
Oh ya! It's so big there is a man who drives around the parking lot with a little train-mobile to carry people from one end to the other! Park your car and catch a ride s. Guest guest
Yes it is free! (the natural history museum) The building that houses it is also full of class rooms so part of the museum is on one floor and the " Bird display " is on another but well worth your time. And in the hall ways are glass cases full of other things to see also. s. Guest guest
Hello, I was in Iowa in early April and there were a few interesting things to see. The funny thing is that I asked a few locals what we should do and they sort of had this deer-in-the-headlight look and said " uhhhhh, I don't know. " . I guess it isn't really a touristy sort of place. I really liked the Amana Colonies (we went there twice, actually). It is very pretty with all of the historic buildings, nice shops, bakeries, chocolate shops, restaurants, etc. It is only about 20-30 minutes and is an easy and direct drive. Check out www.amanacolonies.com. We also drove to Kalona (just south of Iowa City) to see some Amish farms. It was pretty interesing if you haven't seen it before. If you like coffee, there is great coffee shop called Terrapin Coffee over by the New Pioneer Coop food store. Ithas a really nice atmosphere to sit and relax. Other than that, the outlet mall is nice to visit if you don't have one near you (otherwise it might be more of the same). There is a 's Outlet store there with lots of good baby clothes with lots of snaps (perfect for the FAB). That's all I can think of for now. I hope your appt with Dr. Ponseti goes very well. You will be happy you went! Take care, Halley > > I am taking Weston to see Dr. Ponseti next week. We will likely need > to be there for 3-4 weeks. I will only have a rental car for the first > week. Guest guest
You've already received lots of ideas for things to do - wanted to let ease your mind, if it needs easing in any way about the RMH that you'll LOVE it there. I remember, we snuck in a small t.v. (because they don't have them in the rooms) and a small refrigerator (yes, you read me right - my husband " snuck " in a small fridge!). We didn't like the idea of doing all these family things with people who weren't our family. After about 2 days (literally - maybe sooner) we didn't like the feeling of being " holed " up in our room. We started to venture out into the community rooms and found ourselves talking to other clubfoot Mommy's and Daddy's - people who were there under different circumstances. We found people who we ate dinner with, took care of eachother's kiddos, TALKED, it was wonderful. We started spending WAY more time in the play room, t.v. room(s), etc. than in our own room. Needless to say, we didn't need our own t.v. or fridge afterall. Good luck - I must ditto that you won't AT ALL regret this experience. Dr. Ponseti is an angel! Guest guest
Hi. I lived in Iowa City while in grad school and it is a great town. We get back there now for Lily's treatment with Dr. Ponseti ( & my children's asthma treatment) and I always try to build extra time in my day so we can " play " while we are there. Cambus is great and Iowa City is a wonderful walking town. ee's e-mail was great and complete. The only thing I would add is (while you still have a car), I have heard wonderful things about the Devonian Fossil Gorge, http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/coralville/devonian_fossil_gorge.htm. Good luck. > > I am taking Weston to see Dr. Ponseti next week. We will likely need > to be there for 3-4 weeks. I will only have a rental car for the first > week. Guest guest
You don't have to sneak things in, haha They'll let you borrow a frig if you need one. But you're right, it's way more enjoyable to use the common areas with the other families, you make some good friends there. s.
