Guest guest
1st of all thanks to everyone fro the woderful advice you give on this site. My son was scheduled to have major surgery in June but after being on this site we sought a second opion at Shriners in Houston. The Doctors said there that he has a slight case and did the tendon release surgery on 3-15-06. The doctros said that theresults are so good and the releas was so good that my son will only have to wear his DBB now at night and nap time and the brace alone during the day. I was so excited at the thought of my son wearing shoes for the first time only to be disapointed to find that none of them fit. Both of his feet are the same size but we cannot find any shoes wide enough in the ankles to fit his foot and the brace down in the shoe. Any one know where you can order shoes or where and what brand that you may be able to get in the stores? HELP
Guest guest
If your son is not in the DBB for 23/7, and they are prescribing another brace, then the Dr. is NOT following the Ponseti Method the way it is supposed to be! He can and WILL relapse is this continues! Guest guest
Hello! I'm glad the doctors at the Shriners were able to help your son. How old is he now? Are they using the Ponseti method at that Shriners? I don't recall posts from other families who have gone there, so I'd be curious to know what your experience was like. Did they tell you why he needs to wear a brace during the day for support or to keep the correction? I assume it's an AFO? This is typically not needed unless there are some underlying issues outside of clubfoot (such as a need for additional support to help the little one stand). Since they told you that his clubfoot was slight, I am guessing that he probably doesn't have any other major issues. There's information on post-correction bracing in the global help booklet on the Ponseti method here: http://global-help.org My biggest concern with wearing an AFO if it's not needed would be that it can promote muscle atrophy in the calf muscle. That said, if he does need the AFO (or whatever his daytime brace is), there are some pretty wide width shoes available at Stride Rite or See Kai Run. As you might know, the standard Ponseti protocol requires the FAB (DBB) to be worn full time for 3 months prior to the tenotomy and then reduced in hours after that. There's additional information here if you're interested: http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil I hope this helps! Guest guest
Another option for wide width shoes is Vans-my son wears smo's during the day to help stabilize his ankles-he's loose ligamented and the shoes he got were vans-they are really cute gym shoes.
