Guest guest
I'm feeling uneasy tonight. My 6 yr old ASD son has GI issues common to many ASD kids and I can't seem to get control of anything for a substantial period of time. We go through the patterns where BM's might look normal for a couple of weeks, but then we go back to loose. Today, he had a horrible cramping attack and we were clueless as to the cause. We have been chelating since May, although we have taken a few breaks during illness or constipation cycles. I know that he has a specific yeast problem and we've been treating it with nystatin and probiotics. We get it cleared up and start chelating again and then it comes back. I don't want to go with something stronger for the yeast because it might overtax the liver and kidneys. He takes all the DAN protocol supps also. He is also GFCF. What's all this doing to his body? It just seems like so much at once - enzymes, yeast control, probiotics, fish oil, CLO, zinc, nu thera, selenium, TMG, etc. and chelation every other weekend. After the cramping attack today - I thought - what am I doing? I feel like stopping everything but the diet and letting his body rest, but maybe that would be the worst thing. We have added everything slowly over that past few years - I feel uncomfortable and need comments. Keep a journal and note if the bms get lose on the first day or so after a round is completed. > I know that he has a specific > yeast problem and we've been treating it with nystatin and probiotics. > We get it cleared up and start chelating again and then it comes back. This may be for the reason I indicated above. > He takes all the DAN protocol supps also. > He is also GFCF. What's all this doing to his body? My son does not tolerate ANY supplements, even with enzymes. The only supplements I give him are calcium from my health food store [after finding one that he tolerates] and enzymes. I have also heard that chelation helps many children not need the larger doses of some of the supplements, or even some supplements at all. So for example, if your son did well on a mega dose of a vitamin, but chelation is improving his gut, then he might not need the mega dose any more and may actually begin having a bad reaction to it. I know my son has improved after five rounds of chelation to the point that he now tolerates many foods that he did not tolerate before chelating, so I know for my son that chelation is improving his gut function. > After the cramping attack today - I thought - what am I doing? If you have access to testing and would like to do that, you might receive some information on which supplements you should consider stopping. Or you can stop everything except the diet, and possibly also keep chelation, and see if your son improves. Or even if he does not improve or even gets worse, at least you could then add back the supplements one at a time and see if one or more of them were causing a bad reaction now, or which ones are helping his improvement and which ones are not.
