Guest guest
dang, smart kid! but you know me, I draw a hard line on that stuff - what would you do if she insisted on running out in traffic? this is just as non-negotiable. s. Help!! She's unbuckling them!!! Livi got new s a couple weeks ago. Coinciding with the arrival of her new shoes was a new skill - shoe unbuckling and removal. I don't know if the shoe itself is easier to unbuckle, or she's just getting more dexterity (or both!)but she is NOT keeping them on, under any circumstance. She waits until I've put her to bed, then throws them out of her crib. I put them on, she takes them off, I put them on, she takes them off. HELP!!!! Guest guest
Now that's scary!! My son is only 4 months younger than Livi..I hope he doesn't follow suit! Just a thought.....the shoes are interchangeable, so if she has both shoes the same size, you could swap them round so the buckle is on the outside. it might make it a bit more difficult for Livi to 'get at them'! Good luck - I'll be watching your posts in the hope I don't need to refer back to them myself soon! How clever, being able to undo 6 buckles like that! Stella > > Livi got new s a couple weeks ago. Guest guest
Livi, Livi, Livi, what are we going to do with you? So now we need to come up with a way to keep these suckers buckled, hmm... Well, the first thing I would suggest is reasoning with her. So she's almost 30 months, she may be able to understand the consequences of not wearing them. Depends on her maturity level. Not that you want to scare her or anything, but do you think if you showed her pictures of her foot at birth, and the casting process and explained that it could turn back in like that if she doesn't wear the brace that she would get it? Also, a reward system should work - gold stars or stickers on a calendar every night she leaves the shoes on, accumulate a certain # of stickers and she gets a special treat or gets to do a special activity like watch extra tv, a special movie, a trip to the zoo, or the ice cream shop, etc. These may be things that you will have to try, and then if you see she is not getting it, drop it for a month and then try again, she will get it eventually. Also, in the meantime, keep plugging away with the shoes, it's probably getting to be a game for her now and if it wasn't made a big deal of she might get tired of the game. As far as actually physically keeping the shoes on, I guess there's still always duct tape, but that would get awfully sticky on that leather. Here's a wild idea, does she know how to un-button? What if you sewed a couple buttons on to the shoe just on the otherside of the buckle and put slits in the straps so that after they are buckled, then you have to also button the strap to the shoe. If she can't get that open then she can't get the strap out of the buckle. Does this make sense? Crazy? Someone who actually uses these things tell me if you think this would work... > > Livi got new s a couple weeks ago. Guest guest
Thanks ladies!! I don't know that she's *quite* ready for reasoning. I try to explain things to her (don't pour your milk on the floor because it makes the floor all wet, etc.) and she gets that blank look and then will start singing her ABC's or something - I don't think she's there yet, though maybe I underestimate her. I think I'm going to try putting the buckles on the outside and see if that helps. Like I said, it wasn't ever a problem in the old shoes, so maybe these ones have bigger buckles? I also got an idea to wrap some tape around the ends of the straps so they don't fit through the holes so easy. I have noticed that she also does not walk around the house with the new brace on. She doesn't even crawl. No red spots on her feet, but maybe they just aren't comfortable? I wish she could speak well enough to tell me. Wish me luck - I will update once I see how the reverse buckles and tape work! Darby > > > > Livi got new s a couple weeks ago. Guest guest
I don't know how big Livi is but maybe a sleep sack would work (reduce her access to them). Some sleep sacks are quite large. There is one up to 3T, is 42 " in length, and for up to 40 lbs... Lily is quite a bit younger but is in a sleep sack with her brace and it is wide enough. Good luck. > > > > > > Livi got new s a couple weeks ago. Guest guest
The button idea sounds good, but you'd need to be very careful - there would be stitching on the underside of the leather which would mean it wouldn't be nice and smooth and might rub against her foot. Guest guest
Well, I tried switching the shoes to " buckles-out " as suggested - no luck there, she had them off in seconds flat. So I took some tape, I think its masking tape (you know the white, papery kind) and wrapped the ends of the straps, just enough to make them too big to pull through. It worked!! Yay!!! I would love to sew on buttons, however I am a girl who doesn't own a needle and thread, much less how to sew! Thanks for the suggestions, everyone, Darby > > > > > > > > Livi got new s a couple weeks ago. Guest guest
Darby, It's funny that you thought of the tape thing, because that's exactly what I was going to suggest before I came up with the button thing. But I didn't think it would work because I thought she would still be able to get them loose enough to get her feet out even without pulling the strap all the way out of the buckle. But, sshhhh...don't tell her I said that, she'll probably figuring that out soon enough on her own. > > > > > > > > > > Livi got new s a couple weeks ago. Guest guest
LOL I actually wrapped the tape a few times around and partially over the buckle part. She's not quite coordinated enough at this point to peel the tape off - it's kind of a pain for ME to do it! So hopefully she will forget that she ever found this skill!!! > > > > > > > > > > > > Livi got new s a couple weeks ago.
