Is he on something for reflux, could you try mylanta or something, even peppermint tea. Could he be acidotic, has he got ketones, Im only guessing here. i cant stand the hiccups,it must be exhausting having them for that long. Im afraid my only treatment for you would come with a very good label on the bottle. Thinking of you, hope Max is OK. Jody (mum to Liam ans Cam) > Well, you all knew that this was coming. Guest guest
Thanks, Jody. After 10+ hours of this and none of the " specialists " calling back, I called our internist. He prescribed Thorazine. I had to wait for the pharmacist to do a cross-check with all the other meds Max takes before I could go pick it up. When Max did finally get a pill, they stopped within 15 minutes. That poor guy had over 12 hours of hiccups. We are not sure what causes it. Dr. H. thinks it's because of delayed gastric emptying and extra air that gets into his stomach. He has no tube, so I can't vent him anymore. Or he can't vent himself. The thought is that the pressure builds up and the diaphragm begins to contract due to the increased pressure. He begins to hiccup which is nature's way of getting rid of extra air, but he begins to take in more and more, so the cycle continues. I'm relieved that we have a med onhand now that will put them to a stop right away. I'll have to discuss this further with Dr. H. when we see her in October. Oh- and you were right to suggets Mylanta or something like it. The doctor wanted to try Reglan, but Max is allergic to it. He already takes Protonix and Prevacid anyway. Guest guest
Hey Jodi. Saw your post that Max has the hiccups under control. Sorry to hear you had to go through all that - sometimes I wish we had direct access to our physicians personal phone - it would make life so much easier <grin>. Hope you are all having a better day today. Thinking of you. - H > Thanks, Jody. After 10+ hours of this and none of the " specialists " > calling back, I called our internist.
