Guest guest
Hi Jane I am not going to advise you on whether you need to take poor in or not. I don't test my son's ketones and so I am not sure of what 85 would indicate or what you should do. However, while you wait for someone to respond, have you considered giving her anything to eat? I was thinking ice cream or pop sickles or whatever she loves. I wouldn't care about nutrition right now; just something! Also, if she'll drink the OJ; keep it going. It's got the natural sugar and it's a liquid (you don't want her to dehydrate). Also are you aware that some stores sell something called pedialyte? It's for kids with stomach upsets/diarrhea where they are not keeping very much down. It is high in the required electrolytes for the body. It's a liquid that the kids drink (like flavoured water). They might even sell them in popsicle form now; something makes me think I read that. Anyway, my kids (unfortunately) refused to drink the stuff but you might have more luck. A pharmacy would definitely have it. Can you call your regular ped? It sounds like might be coming down with something. Anyway, I wish I could have given you a definite answer. Just know I'm out here if you need to talk. Good luck and let us know how is doing! Debby HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!! > > Need some advice. My daughter did not eat well yesterday - very > little in fact. Guest guest
I would agree with Debby. And, her suggestion about eating anything is right on. That's what I do with Ian - age 2 - RSS. Especially when he's ill - sometimes we have tea parties with tiny little tea cups with heavy whipping cream and we use gold fish crackers and m & m's for " crumpets " . Believe it or not, I'm very big on nutrition and try very hard to get the " right stuff in " - but, I make the exceptions when necessary. Pedialyte does have popsicles - my children aren't fond of them - but, if that's all we have - they usually don't turn them down. I personally have reactive hypglycemia and the orange juice always helps me. If you are concerened about too much sugar - I gradually will water it down and switch to something else. Not sure I'm helping - but, hope this offers you something else to consider. Thinking of you. > > Need some advice. My daughter did not eat well yesterday - very little in fact. Guest guest
You really need to be carefull because when children become Hypoglycemic and you give them OJ to elevate it they can rebound real fast. If she continues to spill keytones take her to the ER emediatly noone knows this routine better than me we go through this on a daily basis. Good luck and keep us posted. Chrissy Mom to.......... Guest guest
Jane, How is doing now? Is she able to keep up her blood sugar levels? Does she still have moderate ketones? Is she eating at all? If the answers to these questions are no, yes and no, then you need to take her to the ER and have her admitted. She will need D10 IV fluids to help get rid of the ketones and help stabilize her blood sugars. Then you need to gradually reintroduce food as tolerated and slowly wean her off the IV. I have this down to a science with Max. I won't go into detail until I hear the latest from you. Just giving her oj will not do the trick if the blood sugars go up, then down, then up, etc. Lethargy is not a good thing for our kids. She needs to be stabilized. Guest guest
Thank you all for the advice. The OJ did perk her up and then about an hour later she ate - and well - yogurt, cereal, a bite of banana AND a few bites of toast. Later, I found another tooth showing itself - my daughter is almost 2 and has 2 - now almost 3 teeth. The rest of the day was fair eating - but better than yesterday. I thought I was confident I would know when to take her in - but this morning it was yes, then no, then " I don't know " . So thanks for the input. She is doing well now - We will wake her tonight and try to give her something. If another bad morning tomorow I will bring her in to make certain there is not an underlying infection - i.e. ear. Guest guest
All I have to say is - I'm sure glad people like yourself and some of the others have the wonderful knowledge that you do. It has taught me a great lesson in coaching others carefully. Thank you for your wisdom and help to others. Looks like I learn more and more each day. - > You really need to be carefull because when children become Hypoglycemic and > you give them OJ to elevate it they can rebound real fast. Guest guest
Her blood sugars are OK because you are giving her the orange juice. You have to monitor her ketones to see if her body has used up her glycogen storage. I definitely have realized that we have to create an Emergency Treatment pamphlet. These kids have to be able to EAT foods -- it is the complex carbohydrates that they need, in order to keep up their glycogen storage. Keep testing her ketones AND her blood sugar levels. If she spills moderate ketones regularly, even if her BSL are normal, take her in for an IV. Jenn > > Need some advice. My daughter did not eat well yesterday - very little in fact. Guest guest
Hi Jane I wasn't sure how old your little one was. I was thinking teeth.....both of my kids reacted that way. I should have asked you. I'm so glad to hear everything worked out for you all. Take care Debby Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!! > > Thank you all for the advice. Guest guest
After going to the convention and finding out that Hailey's blood sugars could be dropping as well, I called the nurse at the doctors office and asked her about maybe getting keytone strips to keep a check on Hailey. The nurse I spoke to that day made me feel like such a fool when she screamed " keytone strips, I haven't heard of anyone using them since the '80s and that was in the hospital. I do have a blood glucose machine, but I do not know how to go about they keytone strips. I wouldn't know how to use them if I had them either. --- Brock wrote: > Her blood sugars are OK because you are giving her > the orange juice. > You have to monitor her ketones to see if her body > has used up her > glycogen storage.
