Guest guest
Faun, There is a tip/tricks doc in the files section that you could look at and see if any of it helps. Also check the width of the bar it should be about the same as her shoulders. Sometimes extra padding under the strap of the shoe will help with the red marks. We also had a extra piece added to the heal so it could not slip out. I'm sure some of the more experienced mothers will help more. I don't think AFO's is the way to go, some parents have had some problems with them not holding the correction, again I hope some one that has used them will jump in here. Good Luck! SHe just finished her 6 weeks of casting on thurday. She goes to UC Children's hospital in Sacramento. We were given the Dennis Brown bar for her to wear 24hrs a day. It is impossible to keep them on. We tried it with no socks, 1 sock, 2 socks, etc. We cinched it so tight that now her L foot (her non club foot) has these terrible marks on it from the friction. So we took of the brace and I called and left a message for Hanger Orthodics and hope to speak with someone there tomorrow. And I am sure I don't even need to mention the fact that we slept a total of 2 hours a night. She is absolutely miserable with them on. I've done some research and would like to switch her to the AFO brace but I was wondering if anyone knows if she is too young to have the AFO brace. Everything I've read it seems children with the AFO brace are older. It seems to me that since she has 1 club foot and her case is a 5 out of 10 on the severity scale, that the AFO brace would be fine to keep the correction that the casts did. If I can't get the AFO brace does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep them on, what to do to keep her poor feet from blistering and skin breaking. Please Help! This is so awful! Thank you! Guest guest
I had the same problem with my son, until the third time he went back in the cast I decided to check out shriners hospital in st. louis to see dr. dobbs. He is wonderful the first time ever he fell asleep during the casting period, he is just great. We went last week we will go this coming weekend to get the cast off for good and to get his new braces. Larissa and 7-15-05 Faun Try wrote: Hello, I am new to this group. Guest guest
Hello Faun, Welcome to the group. As you will come to know, this is such a helpful place. There are so many knowledgable people here - they can pretty much answer anything for you! I just wanted to chime in on the use of the AFO's. We used them for about 4-5 months on (05/12/05 BCF) and I am honestly sorry that we did. I tried the DBB right out of the casts and it was horrible. After a week of nonstop crying from all of us our Shriners DR suggested the AFO's. We jumped at the chance for a peaceful baby and home life. Looking back now that we are in the s, I can clearly see that we made the wrong decision. They are hard plastic, sweaty, and we couldn't see where his feet were. His feet look OK, but if we would have just stuck with it and worked harder with some of the moms here, I am positive that his feet would look better. We switched back to the DBB, then went to the PM's and his feet already look better. It is tough, I know, but you all will get through it fine. has adjusted great to his new lifestyle of the bar - no problems at all! Definitely look at the tips document - what a lifesaver. I hope that our experience helps you. Hunter 07/31/03 05/12/05 PM's 20/7 Faun Try wrote: Hello, I am new to this group. I have a 2 month old daughter who was born with a right club foot. Guest guest
Faun, I hope others beat me to the punch on here but let me say AFO's are not the answer UNLESS it is what is called the shoe, or Ponseti/ shoe. This is still the " boots and bar " but the shoe is designed differently. The bar is absolutely necessary, even for one club foot. There are documents on file with this group to help you find how to best get the shoes on comfortably - and other advice. Let us know more how it goes so we can continue to help you towards a successful road to recovery here. I know it stinks right now bu I promise it can get better and eventually will but let us help you too so that better will come quicker, OK? That's what we hang around here for. ee Mother of 3 clubfooted boys Dennis Brown Bar Problems Hello, I am new to this group. I have a 2 month old daughter who was born with a right club foot. Guest guest
Quick update. My daughter Brooklyn's foot was really messed up from the Markell shoes, which were too small. Anyhow, we went back into the orthotics place, they ordered bigger shoes and I told them I wanted the Ponsetti AFO bar with velcro shoes. He is going to try to get it approved thru my doctor and the insurance. Her left foot had a blood blister on the heel and bruising on the foot in line with the big toe and on the pad of her foot under the big toe. It is getting better now, but, I was pretty mad that they did not give me the right size shoe to begin with. So now her foot has been out of brace and cast for almost a week and her shoe won't be in till thur. On another note, I now have a pair of size 000 Markell shoes that have BARELY been worn. I would love to give them or donate them to someone. If anyone needs them or knows where I can donate, please let me know. Thanks for all your help, I will update again soon!
