Oh, yeah-- I have to go to this one! I haven't been in ages... and it's on

Hope to meet you there, (and go visit your mom, too)!

My name is Rich.

I can't speak for others on this list. You may want to post your message on

the Mt Sinai page as well. You will probably get more responses there. The

address is

MtSinaiDS

Check the site at www.surgicallyslim.com for exact time and location.

I will be in NYC for my 6month followup with DR Herron on the 20th. I will be

coming up the 19th...maybe I can make the meeting. That would be great.

Hi, ! I really honestly don't know who attends nowadays. I

did go to at least two meetings pre-op and then one at my first month

out. It is pretty difficult for me since I have two young kids at

home and have to drag them all the way to Mt. Sinai (my dh meeting me

there to watch them in the cafeteria while I attend the meetings).

This, coupled with the fact that the tone of the group on the whole

(and this may have changed) seemed rather bristly and exclusionary, is

the reason I haven't attended since. :) It is also a pretty large

group so I didn't feel as comfortable speaking about issues that

pertained to me (which involve emotions, not eating problems or health

effects). I'd like to see what the group is like now and whether it

is any different or still the same old, same old...

There are plenty of people from NYC on this list... I just have no

idea whether they attend the support meetings or not. Some that I

have talked to haven't been in quite awhile, mainly sharing my view of

the group's standoffish or contentious atmosphere. Others may not

attend because it doesn't fit into their schedules. Perhaps more will

respond to this thread -- if they dare! ROFL

I would like to go this month because of the topic: plastic surgery.

I'd also like to see people that I haven't seen in ages who may be

there this month! :)

: About the MtSInaiDS group... it appears that now it is

'invitation only'. When I joined way back (and subsequently left the

group because of the constant bickering that was going on at that

time. As a recent post-op, it was just way tooooooo much!), there

wasn't any process to become a 'member' - one just signed up.

Now, you have to answer some questions and reply to the three

moderators. Have you tried it yet? I did this but the e-mail addy

they provided to send the response to won't work because I'm not yet a

member! LOL Hopefully this will get straightened out. DId they sent

you an invite as a recent post-op? Did anyone mention this group to

you? I think it's rather odd that they are going to make it so

top-secret and exclusive IF they aren't actively telling new post-ops

that it is available to them....

Now, my situation is slightly different. I am further post-op and

they have changed the process since I had my surgery. But, I'm really

curious as to the outreach they do for new post-ops... If someone

wants to join the list, how are they going to do this with the current

setup? Furthermore, how are they going to even know about the list if

there isn't any active program or outreach to call it to their

I hope someone mentioned it to you at some point and asked you to

join. I think this is imperative for all recent ds-post-ops at Mt

I suggest getting in some gatorade! When I had a day when I suddenly felt

extremely nauseous and sick, etc, it was because I was getting dehydrated..as

There is nothing secret about this group that I know of.

As far as I know the only thing required to join is that you are post op.

If I'm not mistaken the requested info is only a means of helping others

in the group to identify each other in terms of the who what when and how

much category.

The meetings for the most part have lightened up considerably. Thank God.

Anytime a large group comes together there is bound to be dissension

amongst the ranks as to how things should be handled. New york being New

York there are always going to be some strong personalities in the room.

Rather than get upset about the whole thing I just kinda sit back and

laugh at the whole thing. If it gets to be to much then I leave. It has

never come to that and more often than not I walk away feeling good about

what I have learned at the meeting.

Hey, ! :) No, not the DrGagnerOSSG list... I don't know if

that is very active (I've been on that one forever and only got like 3

e-mails so far! LOL)... the MtSinaiDS list is the one I'm referring

to (the one Rich talked about in his e-mail).

It sounds like a secret club but I don't know ... I just found it odd

that sometime in the past 10 months it's become monitored and private

(perhaps they experienced problems? I don't know since I haven't been

active on that list at all). It would be interesting to find out the

reasons for it (could be totally innocent and well-founded) and see

what's up with everyone there! :)

In any event, I think that post-ops should definately be given info

about it --- And pre-ops are allowed to 'lurk' but how the heck would

they ever find out about it if it's so top-secret (I guess one way to

do it would be to get this info from someone at a meeting.. but if

it's by invitation-only, a person from the list would have to send the

e-mail invite).

Hi, Rich: I don't think it's 'secretive', but if it's invitation-only

then it will be more difficult for pre-ops (and post-ops) to even gain

access to the site unless they get actively 'invited' from someone on

the list. I experienced problems with the process because they sent

the questions and then, when I tried to send the answers back to the

address they listed, it bounced back because I wasn't 'registered' (I

am registered on Yahoo in general, just not to that group). So, I

sent individual e-mails and hopefully those got through and this can

be straightened out.

I would think that more effort would be made to inform pre-ops and

post-ops about the group's existence.. I know that it was mentioned in

the past at meetings and this may be the one main way that people find

out about it (after all, it is meant to be a 'link' to the meetings at

Mt. Sinai and an extension of such). I just think that a lot of

people could potentially fall through the cracks so to speak and not

participate when they could really use or want a more 'local' or

'specific' support group. :)

Well, I'm glad things have cooled down somewhat... I attended when the

group was just starting to become more 'organized' or 'structured'...

it wasn't a pretty sight! LOL It has been at least 9 months since

I've attended, so I have no idea how things are being run now. I like

the idea of topics and some have sounded really interesting. It's

just been quite difficult for me to get the kids all the way up there

and arrange childcare, etc. :)

I think I'm up for it this month! LOL

We were talking about the yahoo group not the actual meeting at Mt Sinai on the

19th

Please do come to the meeting. It is very informative and fun to place faces

with the names.

Yes, I was referring to the MountSinaiDS e-group (which is an

extension of the meetings and meant to supplement them) NOT the actual

meetings. The meetings are open to all preops considering surgery and

ALL post-ops. The e-group is supposed to be as well, but I think they

have increased security or something for some reason (it wasn't like

this before but the group wasn't as organized before, either).

I'm sure you could join the MtSinaiDS e-group but you *may* experience

some difficulties getting signed up due to the new setup. If your

e-mail comes back, try writing the moderators at their individual

e-mail addresses (they are provided in the initial response to sign

up).

Hope to see you there, Gwen! :)

Hey , funny you should ask about Gagner's monthly meeting. I

just came home from Ren's. It was a good meeting though undoubtedly

smaller than the Mt. Sinai gatherings!

So, are those meetings just for " Gagnerettes, " or are us other folk

allowed to attend too? I may have to go to a Christmas party on the

19th, but if not, and I'm welcome, perhaps I will attend. Plastic

surgery is something I will want to learn about, no doubt! If I can

come, I'll be sure to let you know beforehand.

Anyway, hope you are feeling better. I wouldn't want nausea, and

malaise of any kind, to dampen that acerbic wit of yours! ;) Feel

better soon!

Actually, I was interested in the NYU meetings because they are much closer

for me to attend. I went to one (it was a big production because they had

changed the location but didn't have any information about that -- I finally

was able to find out where it was)... and it turned out to be a lapband

meeting! AGH! I stayed and it was interesting but I really wanted to make

the post-op DS meeting (I guess they had switched dates but the automated

computer notice said it was a DS meeting)!

I should go to the website to find out when the meetings are because I don't

think any automated messages are in the works... Actually, I haven't received

any in quite awhile.. Perhaps they stopped doing that?

Yes, you bet I think you should come. What, are they gonna check

your surgery card as you walk in? Besides Ren used to work with

Gagner so there's your connnection! I really hope you can come cuz

I'd LOVE to meet you. The plastic surgery topic sounds great, too.

I've already been thinking about the belt lipectomy! I'm feeling a

little better this morning. I'm sorry to say that I actually barfed

for the first time last night. Fortunately it was a more gentle barf

than those pre-op heaving ones. I think it had something to do with

hot, white bread and butter? I only had a couple bites, but maybe

that was enough to do me in? I'm going back to a more gentle diet

today.

Love ya,

Dear ,

A nice warm salty pretzel lured me in very early on post-op. I took a

few small bites and it was bliss. Then, I had a " stuck " feeling and

I took a few sips of lemonade. That little piece of pretzel must

have blown up and expanded in my brand spanking new small tummy and

all I wanted to do was barf to relieve the pain. I was in Costco

trying to heave in a small brown paper bag. Eventually, the

pretzel " glob " passed through and I had relief. I waited a few

months before I tried hot pretzel again.

Poor girl! At Costco, no less! When I was in NYC I saw all of these

wonderful street vendors with hot pretzels, hot dogs, roasted nuts,

fruits, vegetables, etc. It was very hard passing it up mentally.

OK, so I'm a slow learner. When instructions say " no white bread for

the first few weeks " maybe I should obey? Nah, not me. I gotta push

and push and push until I puke! Oh well.
