Guest guest
I have a tentative DS surgery date on Jan. 30 with Dr. Jossart in San Francisco. My major remaining concerns involve what I should expect post surgery; particularly the first three months. I realize that individuals will vary, but I feel I need to have a better feel for the range of possibilities. I once tried Xenical, but couldn't tollerate it due to the orange oil slick discharge. I understand I should expect a similar condition after surgery. Is this temporary or a long term side effect? I also understand gas and stool odor are an issue. How do folks manage short and long term? Any thoughts would be appreciated! thanks, Steve. C.
Guest guest
Hi Steve and congratulations on your surgery date! When you have your surgery I'll be just 6 months out so I thought I'd pass on some answers to your question. I also took Xenical-actually it was Orlistat when it was in trial stage..and thts when I took it..I only lasted 5 weeks on it for exactly the same reason you quit-the oil slicks. I lost about 15 lbs in thos 5 weeks and the pay off was not sufficient for me. As I worked in the public at that time, the disadvantages of having a leaky butt were too great to stand. There is no comparison, for me, between the DS and Xenical. My BMs are not nearly as bad as they were with that drug..and in fact I have had pretty regular type of BM's since about 4 weeks. If I suffer it's because I made really poor food decisions...but I remember once when I had mac and cheese on Xenical..too gross!!! I hve mac and cheese at least weekly now with no foul consequences. As you might have noticed, we speak pretty frankly about bodily functions here so please excuse me if I am slightly crass sounding <LOL>. As far as other things post op, I was weak as a kitten for about 6 weeks..and everyone here said ~~6 weeks/6 weeks, just wait for 6 weeks~ That was so true! At almost exactly 6 weeks I perked up and felt much better both physically and mentally. My surgery was performed lap. and took about 3 hrs. I was out of the hospital at noon on Weds. following a Monday AM surgery. The first weeks were somewhat difficult for me-I lived on cottage cheese and applesauce, making sure I had organic cottage cheese with asidolphous (sp). I really believe that helped me not to suffer from the lose bowels that some folks get. Ialso started taking a pro biotic capsuel fom the HFS at about 1 month for the same reason-surgery with antibiotics kills off all the natural bacteria in ones gut..replacing it ASAP helps a lot. I had a puree diet for 3 weeks and was happy to do so. After then I slowly incorporated other things into my diet-if something didn't hit me right, I tried it again in a few weeks. I just started being able to eat cabbage family veggies this month. since I tend to eat lots of veggies that really hurt. I also missed the fresh corn season last summer ;-(.... I've had a steady weight loss although it has slowed down since Thanksgiving, what with holiday parties and so on. I don't deprive myself of anything including carbs and sweets. I have lost 70 lbs..slow in comparison to others, but I was a 'lightweight' to start with, having slightly less thn 100 lbs to lose. Additionally I hve 'lost' a CPAP, insulin and 2 of 5 hypertensive medications. I'm hoping to be able to cut back additional blood pressure meds in January at my 6 month check up with my PCP. There are quite a few successful guys on this list, including another Steve who is great resource nd Joe who is one of the most wonderful people I have never had the pleasure of meeting. It's amazing hw close one can become to internet friends who have walked the same journey. Be well Steve and keep asking questions, keep in touch with us. Were here to help!
