Guest guest
It's me again, the mother of the twin boys. Do any of you know if the head shape will still correct if the head is not growing much any more? For example, will the pop-out part of the head be pressed down a little even without head growing? It's just because my boys were born with the smallest heads in newborns and now they are above 95% percentile for the same aged babies. They are 14 months by 20th this month. I`m afraid that their heads won`t grow much any more. I am against all people around me to helmet my boys. My husband, the in-laws who live with us now to help out, my parents. Everyone... They are all saying natual is the best and it may cause other side effect if I put the boys into helmets. It's so hard for me. I feel like I'm fighting with everyone. I was always a happy person. Now I feel very depressed. My husband said the most he could take is to helmet our little one whose plagio is more serious. He won`t agree to put our big one into helmet since he`s only got 8mm. I tried so hard with the help of Mike Hall on this board to get the orthotist to agree to deal with my boys (The children hospital here has a strict rule of not dealing with children over 12 months). i really want both of my boys to be treated.. Sorry for complaining so much.
Guest guest
Hi, You are not alone in feeling against all the people around you in wanting to get the helmets. Lots of people on this board seem to feel that way. My son was banded for three months and then I wanted another one for him but since everyone else thought we were " done " I gave in and didn't do it. I totally regret that. You need to follow your instincts. Now, to address your question. You sons' heads ARE still growing. Of course they are. The fact that they now have big heads does not mean that the growth will slow down more for them. They will probably stay in the 95%, and to do that they need to keep growing. My first son was 6.5 weeks premature and born with a small head, of course. By the time he was one he was in the 95% for head size and now, at 4, he still is. His head grew a lot! I say, keep insisting on the bands. I wish I'd gotten my son (the other son, who also has a fairly big head, BTW) a second band at that age. The argument you should make to your husband about the not-so-bad case is that if the other one gets completely corrected the 8mm is going to turn into the bad one. The other thing---and my husband can attest to this---is that if you don't do it you will probably continue to feel depressed, guilty, regretful, etc. for a long time, and that will be bad for your marriage and your own happiness. I am telling you, you really have to do this. You have the support of tons of people on this board. Once you get those helmets, your husband will quickly get used to it and you will feel so much better. Good luck! > > It's me again, the mother of the twin boys. > > Do any of you know if the head shape will still correct if the head is not growing much any more? Guest guest
Hi Thank you for all the information. I am actually going to show this email to my husband. We are only going to do my little one's head cast tomorrow since my family won't agree to do the bigger one's. I am still trying to persuade them to helmet my older boy. The doctor said he'd make time for both my boys tomorrow if I want to helmet both of them. Guest guest
Hi, It is very true that once the other twin improves, the 8mm will start to look worse. That is what happened for me. A year ago I thought if only my toddler's head got to look as good as my older son's head I would be happy. Well, the toddler's measurements are better than the older's now. About the time the younger one's head surpassed the older's, I started getting depressed over the older one's head and wondering how I could have been so blind to his plagio. Well, now I think the older one's head improved a tiny amount from alternative therapy and also the younger one continues to improve a little. I'm still bothered by the now very mild plagio, but I'm starting to think there might be some hope they can both eventually improve enough that maybe with their hair I won't even notice. All 's grandparent's don't think much of the helmet, but they know they don't have a say. Luckily for me, my husband was for the helmet, and he agreed could use one. Guest guest
I am so happy today. I did both my boys head casts!! Now I'll just wait for the helmets to arrive, probably in two weeks. Showed my husband 's email last night, I think he was paying attention. However even this morning, we only took Derrick to the clinic. My husband finally agreed to treat Don when we were in the clinic. We drove back to get Don after the orthotist is done with Derrick. I think my husband is quite concerned about my depression and health, I guess he still loves me. =D Now I'll just have to wait for the helmets. Two weeks is LONG! My boys will be 14.5 months by then. plagiocephaly ; sadietheseamstrix@...From: leinatian@...Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2010 11:05:14 -0600Subject: RE: Re: Will the helmet still correct the headshape if the head is not growing any more? Guest guest
Thank you ! =) You said just right. The grandparents always say that their grandsons are the best and cutest boys in the world, seriously, in the world. ^v^, and they said the misshaped heads are not noticeable to them and to anyone at all. They think I've gone mentally insane.. I really hope that my boys will adjust to the helmets well. My little one never likes things on his head. I'm crossing my fingers as well. And I hope their big heads will continue to grow big and bigger once they have the helmets on! Leina,I have been too busy to write anything lately, but I have been following your posts and I too am super happy for you!I had a thought about why things like this cause such a struggle against grandparents. The thing is, they are all concerned with the here and now---they want to enjoy their grandkids right now, and they want them as cute as possible (no helmet) and without any evidence anywhere that they could ever have a problem. As parents, we are always thinking about our kids' long-term happiness and well being. Grandparents don't even seem to care about that. I have had many struggles with my mother over my kids and they all boil down to this. She just wants to spoil my sons now so they'll be jolly and love her, while I want to teach them manners, brush their teeth, fix their crooked heads, etc., all so their futures will be better.Anyway, now I am crossing my fingers that your boys will get used to the bands with no problem and you will see improvement quickly!>> > The update I wrote yesterday didn't get posted on the board yet. I actually talked my husband into helmeting both my boys. =) I am super happy now!! > > > > I had 7 people around me this evening saying that I shouldn't make the decision to band my children, they are all my in-laws friends. I tried to explain, they just won't listen. I don't care. I am the mother, I know what's best for my babies. > > > > Still very happy! =D Getting the band in two weeks!!> > > > Leina> >
