le,

Max has been on various medications for OCD, depression, and anxiety

over the years. Oh, and add ADD to the mix, as well. Woops - I

forgot Tourette's. Sigh. Zoloft was one of them.

My daughter Jenna, not RSS, has also been on Zoloft.

The results were mixed. It did not really address the issues that

Max had. Jenna did not feel right on it and refused to take it.

Now, they were both much older than 2, however. They were able to

express how they felt and what it did or did not do for them.

I think the first medication we tried on Max was when he was 4 and

it was Ritalin. The purpose was to help him focus on his schoolwork

and his home activities. Sadly, we did not realize that he had

Tourette's at the time and it aggravated his tics. After finding a

great psychiatrist and psychologist, and it took a long, long time,

we have the right mix and Max is doing oh so well.

I am not too familiar with young children at 2 years of age going on

medications like these. I know that in the preschool handicapped

program at my school, there are 3 year olds on various meds, but I

don't know what they are. It is becoming more commonplace and the

teachers are quite happy with the results. While none of us believe

in drugging kids to make them more compliant to our wishes, it

really is in their best interest to make them accessible so that

they can learn and thrive in the least restrictive environment. I'm

sure your doctor has considered this and recognizes the need for

such SUPPORT - and that is the key word here.

Just keep in mind that for many of these medications, it can take

trial and error to find what works best for your child. I don't

even think I could name all we tried for Max. Unfortunately, Jenna,

as 19, is very depressed and we have been trying various meds to

help her out, too. You have so much hope for that first one, but

sometimes you just don't hit it right. I could write reams of the

heartache I feel for my daughter who is going through such a bad

time. But she is seeking help and that is what matters the most.

Let me know through the listserve or privately if I can help you

further. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and see what

happens. If it works out well, that is great. If it doesn't then

you can explore other options. There is no wrong answer.

le,

Zoloft can be great, I just wanted to say that from all that I have read

and heard that it affects children differently from adults. I don't know

about 2 year olds, but I have read that it can cause suicidal or I believe

behavior in children. I would ask your doctor about this.

Hi le,

is currently on Risperdal for his PDD tendancies. He was

obsessed with doors etc. We have had great success with it. However,

didn't start this medication until this year (age 5).

Becca is on Prozac for her anxiety. However, she is non RSS and also

didn't start until this year.

Feel free to email me directly.

Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 5 year old twins
