Guest guest
I had my 6-weak post-op checkup with Dr. Anthone today. I have lost 42 lbs in 45 days, with 10lbs lost in the last 21 days. Clearly my weight loss rate has slowed to a more reasonable level. My total weight loss corresponds to 28% of my initial excess weight. My BMI has dropped from 45.1 to 38.7. Over the last weak and a half I have regained much of my strength. I still tire more easily than pre-op, but I am well enough to return to work tomorrow. Dr. Anthone & Carol gave me my prescriptions for vitamin and mineral supplements. Others have asked about dosage. For the calcium my dosage is 600mg/day + 200mg/day that already exists in the pre-natal vitamin. The dosage is based on the fact that I eat two portion of cheese per day, which gives me 400mg. Those that do not get any significant calcium in their diet would need a 1000mg/day dose. Calcium Citrate is the preferred form, but Carol said Calcium Carbonate is acceptable. In addition, as expected, I was told to take Twin Labs Allergy A & D. Carol also recommended Devrom for the stool odor. While waiting for Dr. Anthone I spoke with a gal who is three weeks post-op and is doing very badly. She isn't able to keep food down and she doesn't do much walking. She does not take any pain medication, as she was not aware that she could use her J-tube to administer it. She had to be readmitted to the hospital! The lesson I take from this is that it is better to risk addiction to pain medication than to not take it when needed. By using liquid Vicodan, I was able to walk regularly and I think it really helped with the nausea and appetite. I still take it at night, but am phasing it out slowly. I would advise others who are doing this surgery to get and use Vicodan whenever they are in pain (assuming no allergic reactions). For those who are recent post ops, eat your protein and your strength will come back. If you can't take the heavy protein bars you can start with Tiger Bars. They are available at Costco for about 60 cents each and have 7g of protein. I find them easier to digest than other bars. Hull
