Guest guest
Hi , I am an expert at this pH probe stuff. All 3 of my kids have had this done. The pH scale ranges from 0-14, with 7 being neutral (this is the pH of water). This is actually what we would like to see in our kids. Any number below 7 starts to fall into the acidic range. If you get the numbers 5 or 6, that really isn't too bad. If the number is 4 or lower, this is not a good situation. However, you have to keep in mind what you are feeding your child at the time. For example, if your child was drinking orange juice or soda, the pH would be lower (somewhere between 2 and 3). Basically (no pun intended), any numbers you see above 7, indicates a basic solution. If your child was drinking milk, the pH should be higher, maybe 8 or 9. However, if your child is drinking milk, and you see the numbers go down to 3 or 4, then there's a good chance there is reflux. You should never see the numbers go to the extremes - a 0 or a 1 is the acidity of battery acid or sulfuric acid, and a 13 or a 14 is the pH of bleach and liquid drain cleaner. Autumn's numbers from 6 - 8 would indicate no reflux, but the 3's might be significant. However, I will tell you that for my non-RSS daughter (who had the worst reflux of all my kids), her pH probe rarely showed low numbers. I was so upset during the testing, because I thought the test would not show reflux, and I knew she had it! It turned out that she had 384 episodes of reflux in 24 hours! I have no idea why the numbers didn't show this, but I could only see them when I pressed the button for an event. And about pressing those buttons, don't worry if you think you missed some things you were supposed to record. The machine records everything regardless of whether you push any buttons or not. The reason they want you to press the buttons is to correlate the results with what the patient was doing at the time (i.e. if reflux happened every time the patient laid down, but not when sitting up). In addition to telling how many episodes of reflux the child had in 24 hours, the doctor will also tell you how long the longest episode lasted. Hope this info helped. Kim C.
