Guest guest
Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself and my family. Our son, , is 5 months old and was born with bilateral club feet. He was casted at 6 days and wore casts for three months, with tenotomies at 9 weeks. He's been in straight-laced shoes and the DBB (nights only) since then. His feet already look perfect. We live between DC and Baltimore and we see Dr. ,who worked with Dr. Ponseti in Iowa. She's at s Hopkins and we are totally happy with her and our son's progress. I'm sorry I didn't find this group months ago when we first found out and had no idea what would happen. We went in for a check-up a couple of days ago and everything looks great. Paddy's doing well, although still having trouble sleeping with the bar occasionally. He wakes himself up, trying to turn over. He was sleeping through the night before he got it, and then started again after a month with it. Then he got the flu and we traveled one weekend. We basically had to start over with it. I think he's figuring out the best sleep position again. It's weird, too, because we never took the bar off during that time. Same ol', same ol'. I'm new to all of this and don't know all the terminology so bear with me. Thanks for having me. It's nice to have somewhere to go when you need support, advice, etc. Ali Paddy (10/21/05) Bilateral CF DBB nights only
Guest guest
Hi Ali, Welcome to the group! Nice to see another Alison here (although I'm with the 2 L's, lol). Glad to hear that things are going well for Paddy - except the sleeping part, I know how that can be! A suggestion on getting him to tolerate the bar better at night - probably not the most appealing suggestion - but I would suggest keeping him in the brace longer hours. If he can get used to moving around with the brace on during some waking hours it will help him be more accustomed to it so that at night when he wants to move around in his sleep it will come as more second nature, than really having to try to find a comfortable position. At Paddy's age relapses are still quite likely so keeping him in the brace a bit longer will do nothing but help in that regard. Typically the bracing schedule starts with a 3 month period of full-time wear (23 hours a day), followed by a gradual reduction in hours so that they are wearing it about 12 hours around the time they are walking. When my son was 6 months old he was still wearing his brace 16 hours a day, we would put it on at 7 each night and daycare would take it off at 11 the next morning. He really learned to be mobile, sitting up on his own, crawling, standing and crusing, all while wearing the brace. Now he is 18 months and wears it 12-14 hours, he still hasn't mastered walking without holding on to anything while wearing it, but he gets around in it quite well and is never bothered by it at night because he is so used to moving around in it. And of course, like I said, keeping the brace on for longer hours gives you extra security against the chance of relapse. Hope this helps you get him sleeping better, we look forward to hearing more about you guys!
