Guest guest
I'm in the same boat- I have a 4 1/2 month old daughter (my third) who has torticollis and plagio. The doctor thought it was Craniosynostosis (I'm sure I butchered the spelling of that, by the way!) and a CT scan ruled that out- thank goodness. So here we are. We were initally told that my daughter's condition was on the moderate-mild side, but we received a phone call yesterday from a person called the CO (not sure what that stands for)- they think she could benefit from the band. Was your second son larger than your first? Did he engage early in your pelvis or sit in one position for a long time at the end of your pregnancy? My third was the longest of the three, and she dropped at the 31 week mark and didn't move from that position until delivery- they think that these conditions led to the torticollis and some in-utero molding. They told me that my daughter's case was mild/moderate, and since they're the same age and both have tort, maybe it would be helpful to look at her pictures? I'd be happy to share if it would help you to get a better idea. > > Hi! I thought I'd introduce myself... I'm Robyn, I have 2 little boys, a 4 year old and now an almost 5 month old who brings me here - that's Riley. We noticed his head seemed a little misshaped and a prominent flat spot last week. He also seems to really tilt his head, especially later in the day as he tires... we brought him to our ped, who I was fully expecting to tell me we're crazy, it's nothing to be concerned about, etc. Not so! He gave me a scrip for xrays, just to make sure it's nothing on the inside and a brochure for CT. I left that office appointment so extremely upset. > > That was last Friday. After going online to the CT site, finding this group and going for our xrays, I honestly feel so much better. We have an appointment at CT in Paramus, NJ, next Wednesday. Guest guest
Hi! I'm new here too and just wanted to tell you I could've written this myself! We went through the very same things with my daughter and she was just casted for her band on Tues. She'll get it next Friday. The only diff is that my doc DID poo poo me! Although she said if i was that concerned she'd have PT evaluate and she'd write the script for the band if I decided to go that route. Well both the physical therapist AND the doc band person who did the measurements confirm that she has mild tortocollis, mild/moderate plagio, and moderate/severe brachy. I KNEW what I was seeing wasn't right! I really wish my doc hadn't made me feel dumb for being concerned.... But anyway, my biggest concern after reading your post is that my doc didn't order xrays. I wonder if I should call tomorrow to inquire about it, just to be sure we've done absolutely everything. Best of luck to you. My daughter is also 4.5 months old, so looks like we'll be going through this journey together! le > > Hi! I thought I'd introduce myself... Guest guest
You may be upset with your doctor, but some people have had doctors refuse to provide them with referrals and prescriptions. So, I'd say that your doctor is probably better than most when it comes to this issue. Mine just kept telling me it would round out and I listened. Finally, at 12.5 months, she admitted that it wouldn't and asked if I wanted to pursue a band. She insisted that my daughter see a neurosurgeon, but the neurosurgeon said that x-rays and scans weren't needed. Part of the reason that she did this was that my daughter's head size was also about the 1st percentile and she worried that the size and the flat spot might be related somehow. The neurosurgeon felt her head and had no concerns. He also said that he did not recommend a band due to my daughter's age. Luckily, I called the ped back. After telling me that many neurosurgeons are generally against bands, she gave me a name of a cranial doctor for a 2nd opinion. With all of that, my daughter didn't get her band until she was almost 15 months old. There is a lot of work to be done with helping the pediatricians understand how to deal with plagio and brachy. In my case, my pediatirican said that she had seen some babies in bands that hadn't improved much and some that had so she was unsure how she felt about them. Knowing what I know now, I wonder whether the difference was the type of band used since there are several options in my area. Guest guest
Hi Robyn! I'm glad you found us : ) I felt really overwhelmed at first, too. Hopefully you'll feel better after your appointment with Cranial Tech. We go to the Connecticut office and have had a great experience. We're five weeks in and have had amazing results so far. I was also afraid that they'd say my son was actually fine/not severe enough to merit a helmet. He turned out to have moderate plagio, and I was so relieved that someone else saw what I saw. I was really starting to think it was in my head! Anyway, I ramble... Your doctor is awesome to send you for x-rays to screen for craniosynostosis and write you a prescription. Many of us have had a very difficult time getting a doctor to help us with those initial steps. And, you are so lucky to have it covered by insurance as well. I'm sure everything is going to work out just fine for Riley. > > Hi! I thought I'd introduce myself... Guest guest
Thanks for the offer to share your pictures : ) I'll leave that up to you, at this point, we have the appointment set for next Wednesday and hopefully we'll know so much more... the waiting really is the hardest part (T.Petty was right, lol!!). But that's an interesting point you bring up - yes, he was larger than my first, a pound and a half larger. AND, although my first son was 10 days early, this little guy went a full week late and I was then induced b/c he was so low and I was so uncomfortable. He really didn't drop until that last week to 10 days though - but that could still have something to do with this, I'm sure. We don't see it in any pictures though, but then again, all of our pictures are straight on, not really of the top of his head. I wonder... thanks again and good luck to you! > > > > Hi! Guest guest
, thank you : ) I'm so glad to hear it's going well for you, and just 5 weeks in. That's great!! We're about the same distance away from both the CT and NJ offices of Cranial Tech, but figured NJ is probably more direct / highway driving. I do love my pediatrician - he said he really doesn't have much experience with any of this, but recently saw a presentation by CT at a national meeting for American Pediatrics and was blown away. So it was all pretty fresh on his mind and the xrays were so that we could rule anything else out. As far as the insurance - we shall see. I have a feeling that just b/c they're considered in network, it may not be that easy. It's all going to depend on his measurements I guess, otherwise it's viewed as cosmetic. I'm sorry, but when we're talking about babies, that is just ridiculous!!!! But thanks for the welcome, the more I learn, the less overwhelmed I feel actually. And I'm hoping I feel better after our appointment next week. Thanks again! > > > > Hi! I thought I'd introduce myself... Guest guest
Hi Robyn! I'm also Robyn and my some went to Cranial Technologies in Paramus, NJ as well. Though for me (living in NJ) the drive was less--45 minutes each way. My son got his 1st DOC Band at 4.25 months and graduated (from his 2nd) at 8.25 months. That was 2 months ago and his head looks great now. I can't say enough positive things about CT and the Paramus location. They were very accommodating and helpful. My son had brachycephaly and torticollis, too. He recently finished physical therapy for the tort and it is pretty much resolved. Starting so young, you'll see great results. Good luck with everything, Robyn > > Hi! I thought I'd introduce myself... I'm Robyn, I have 2 little boys, a 4 year old and now an almost 5 month old who brings me here - that's Riley. Guest guest
I guess the only reason that I am not super upset with the doctor is that my daughter was going through some more serious medical issues during a good portion of her first year. The doctor was concerned that she was not growing and not responding to her reflux medication. She was very involved in helping us get to the bottom of that issue. That is the reason that we have stayed with her, but we have become more proactive in gathering our own information about whatever our children are dealing with (right now we are looking at possible Celiacs). It was interesting that she was surprised when I said that I wanted to pursue the helmet. I guess she thought we wouldn't want to. I am hoping that she learned a lesson that she should always ask. I am equally upset with myself that I didn't push the issue until my daughter was older, but I just didn't know that there was a time limit to wearing the helmet. I spent a lot of time with my daughter's other issues and didn't take the time to research this one. I will not make that kind of mistake again. Because of my experience, I was able to give my coworker the information that she needed to start asking her doctor the right questions. She got her son banded at the same place that we did when he was 5.5 months old. He started in the severe range and ended in the very mild range after less than 3 months. She brought her son with her to work on the last day of school. He is now a year old and his head looks totally normal to me. At least someone else benefited from my experience. And, in the end, looks pretty good so I can't stay upset forever. She got another hair cut last week and now it is clear to me how thick it is getting. I have to look really hard to see her flat spot when her hair is dry. We were lucky that she got good correction for her age. Most of the older babies that have been treated had plagio, but brachy is harder to treat so I wasn't sure how she'd do. But, I am happy with the results. From: ph <lanvino@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Thu, June 17, 2010 11:44:19 PMSubject: Re: Hi! New here and feeling overwhelmed / anxious... Wow, what a story. I'd be super upset in your case as well. But at least you were persistent and your daughter is now getting the care she needs. It is frustrating how it seems most docs don't take this condition seriously. I mean not only can it lead to medical issues later, but who wants their kid to grow up with a crooked head? LOL! I mean seriously! My doc went so far as to say to me that if it were her kid she wouldn't do anything about it.... that made me feel about 2 inches big. But like you said, at least she was willing to go along with whatever path I felt we needed to take. Thankfully. Between my daughter's evaluation and casting (almost 3 weeks) her plagio worsened in all of the measurements, which is interesting since she is primarily on her belly all the time for sleep (she rolls there herself) or in an exersaucer or bumbo or front carrier the rest of the time. She probably has an hour a day on her back these days, if that. Her brachy #'s were the same... CI of 93%. Anyway, I'm rambling now... my point is that I'm glad I went with my gut and went ahead with everything, especially now that I know she certainly would not have improved with simple repositioning or just with "time". I'm sorry you had to deal with the run around for so long. Hopefully more and more docs will be getting more educated on this and will be more proactive in the future. > >> > Hi! Guest guest
I'm glad you're feeling somewhat better. I have one tip before your appointment. Ask the insurance company what the required measurements are and bring the numbers to your appointment. Cranial Tech can tell you while you're there if their measurements fall within the insurance company's parameters so you don't have to do more anxious waiting. That's what I did, and I was so glad to know on the spot that the insurance company wasn't going to say he wasn't " severe enough. " They did give me trouble in other ways since mine was out-of-network, but that was one less thing at least. Good luck! It's a bit of a road trip for us, about 2 hours each way, but we definitely want to go with a DOC band, if need be. And they're considered in network for our insurance, so even better. > > > > > > But it's been a roller coaster of emotions. Thank God it's nothing worse - sitting in the waiting room for pediatric radiation to get our xrays was a real wake up call. He's not sick, this can be treated and I feel kind of silly for being as upset as I am about all of this. But at the same time, of course I'm upset, this is my little boy! > > > > > > We've been trying some repositioning on our own and some simple neck exercises. I can't wait to go to CT next week to find out more and just get this all started. I'd be shocked if they said he didn't need a helmet / band. I think it's a pretty mild case, but what do I know really. And he's still very young, he's 4 and a half months - I'd rather just do anything and everything we can NOW since we caught it. Why wait. > > > > > > This site is great though, I've had a lot of my questions answered already. And I'm just really glad to have a resource of other parents going through the same thing. So thanks!! > > > > > >
