Guest guest
For all I know this info is on the site, but I haven't been able to > read all of the posts from the start. I was wondering if anyone on > this list had the LAP version of the DS? How long ago was it and how > was your recovery period, etc, etc? Could you compare it to the > others on this list who've had the OPEN DS version and their > recoveries? > I'm asking because I've been in contact with Dr.Baltasar,in Spain, who > emailed me he would be offering the LAP version in January 2002.<<<<< Lynne: How exciting to have all options open to you! The lap vs open has been debated here before -- check the archives and I'm sure you'll get lots of useful information and experience. Personally, I had lap ds on January 25 --- I had a remarkably smooth recovery (which I'm sure is due in part to having the procedure done laparoscopically). However, there are certain factors which also worked in my favor: I was 35, had a bmi of 45, no serious co-morbids (other than slight hiatus hernia and back/joint pain), no previous abdominal surgeries. I think lap DS is a wonderful option --- but one has to take into consideration many factors when choosing, including: Starting BMI (it is more difficult generally to perform lap DS on those with higher bmis); previous surgeries/existing adhesions; surgeon experience (Dr. B has an excellent reputation but how many lap surgeries has he performed? You must weigh his relative inexperience with lap DS against his general reputation and see what you feel comfortable with) ..... I personally would always choose lap for myself because of my situation (and now with my past DS experience under my belt) AND if I had an experienced surgeon whose track record I trusted. I don't necessarily think lap is best in *all* cases, but it certainly can be a viable option for many. Definately take a look at the DS archives and compare the advantages/disadvantages of each procedure, check out people's experiences and see which would be best for your situation. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt.
