Guest guest
Hello all, First of all, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the victims of the horrific terror attacks in New York and Washington, and to their families. In a sense, the terrible stories which have emerged from the US have put many of our problems, as parents of children with autism, into some kind of perspective. Nevertheless, those problems are very, very real, as we were dramatically reminded by the dreadful news in the past few days of a mother leaping to her death with her autistic son from a disused railway bridge near Newcastle, here in the UK, apparently because she feared for the boy's future. The latest edition of my 40-page, monthly international autism newsletter, LOOKING UP, is out now. It went to press before the unbelievably appalling news came through from the United States. We have access (in the main languages of the world) to all the latest research findings in the field of autism. The latest issue of LOOKING UP includes: LOOKING UP INTERVIEW: An in-depth conversation with Dr Mesibov, director of Division TEACCH in North Carolina. LOOKING UP PROFILE: Dr Geraldine Dawson, at the University of Washington, who is trying to interlock the various areas of autism research. RESEARCH: Progress in genes search; Nicotine receptors in brain could be linked to autism; Heartburn drug may ease behavioural problems; Risperidone study findings; World's first web-based autism course; Team in Thailand tracks Rett's syndrome sufferers over 14 years; MMR update ... and much more. NEWS: Hong Kong mother accuses government over autistic son who has been missing for a year; Fate of French boy with autism hangs in the balance; The Australian tennis star, Lleyton Hewtt, may have won the US Open recently - but has he met his match with an autistic compatriot obsessed with the moon? Heroic policeman saves girl with autism from path of train; Autistic sisters banned from French flight. AUTISM AND THE ARTS: Two very different painters show off their talent ADULTS WITH AUTISM: A visit to the dentist LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Views from Romania, Argentina and El Salvador ANIMAL THERAPY: How a dog called Uma is proving a hit with five autistic youths in Spain The joy of adopting a child with autism Triplets with autism AUTISM AND LANGUAGE: 'We have found ways to reach our son' You can find more information at the LOOKING UP web site: www.LookingUpAutism.org Once you're there, you will also find previous front pages and a full list of contents of all back issues. In forthcoming issues of LOOKING UP: Handling tantrums; Auditory integration treatment in Chile; The challenge of Tourette's syndrome; Autism in South Africa; When residential care seems the only solution; Dr Darold Treffert explains the autistic savant syndrome; The secret behind autistic children's sleep problems?
