Re: Periactin holiday

We also tried the Periactin holiday and it did not work for us

either. It makes sense, in one vein, but on the flip side, the fact

is that once a child has made " catch-up growth " you probably will

NOT see the child eating that much more on Periactin. Because they

will eat what they need to maintain that new curve. So what may

happen is that we think the Periactin isn't working anymore. We go

off of it; the child eats slightly less, not enough that most

parents would notice but over time, it adds up to weight (50 less

calories a day than what he needs is the equivalent of NOT gaining

1/2 pound per month or so.)

Our daughter went off Periactin, and we thought she was eating so

so. She was gaining weight each month. Then we saw Dr. H after

about, I think it was 7-8 months. She charted 's weight

growth for us over the past 2 years. WOW. Her velocity (meaning

the rate at which she gained in weight) completely fell off when we

took her off Periactin. She was still gaining, but not enough to

keep her weight-for-height proportion the same.

So.... that is our story. Jenn

Thanks, it makes sense. He doesn't even want to eat his favorite

snack anymore, maybe he should just stay on it, it has worked wonders

for him and it is more noticable how much it helped now he is off.
