Guest guest
, I am with you on this. I couldn't have written this better myself. I have all the same questions and concerns that you have. I mean, EXACTLY. I am such a softy too and I don't know how I am ever going to be strong enough to give him shots every night. Heck, I can't even stick him to check his blood sugar! Ugh, am I in for it or what??? ) So, I will be looking at all the responses too. And, maybe we should start emailing each other and give each other some moral support! ) Our appointment with Dr. H is on the 21st! Good luck to you with the GH, Jodi R. > > Hi again everyone- > > We are going to see Dr H. on October 24 to start Laikyn on GH finally. > I am so nervous about giving her the shots. Guest guest
, My daughter fortunately started at 20 months, so we don't have any fights about it. In fact, when she sees I'm getting the shot ready she rolls over and pats her behind and says " here " . She even fans herself to dry the area where I swabbed with alcohol and she doesn't even flinch when I give her the shot. She squirms a little when I have to pinch the skin up, but doesn't fight anymore than that. has no fat so I have to pinch up quite a bit. We use the 31 guage needles. I guess what I'm trying to say is there is hope that it won't be so bad. I was really scared at first too. In fact, I made my husband do the first shot and after that I took over. I knew I could be a little more gentle than him. I know there are alot of other mothers on the list that could help you more since they have children the same age on GHT. Good luck and keep us posted. Tammy laikynrss wrote: Hi again everyone- We are going to see Dr H. on October 24 to start Laikyn on GH finally. I am so nervous about giving her the shots. I know that sounds harsh but I am a total softy and need to find a way to be strong. I really could use some advice for this. Another ?- I know that the starter kit comes with 29 gage needles. Are any of you using smaller ones like a 30 or 31? Laikyn has no body fat and I am not sure if the smaller needles are working for any of you. Are any of you using the ELA MAX creams? I have mixed feelings about that also. PLease answer with any advice for a first time GH giver!!!! Guest guest
hey heather!! i use the 31 gauge needles on christopher, that is what we have used since the beginning. i would just ask when the prescription is written for 31 gauge. also, i have a book i got from genotropin for kids that expalins why then need the shot. it is explained in simple terms. if you like i can send it to you!! we started when christopher was 3yrs as well. we just explained it to him the best we could, the pen (that is what we use) you cant see the needle so that makes it a little easier. we got him a calendar to put a sticker on after his shot each night, which he gets excited about!! good luck!! feel free to email me if you want!! jodie c > > Hi again everyone- > > We are going to see Dr H. on October 24 to start Laikyn on GH finally. > I am so nervous about giving her the shots. Guest guest
, We use the 31 gauge needles and have to request them when we order our GH. Our seven year old daughter Abby is terrified of needles, too, She didn't start on GH until she was 6. we didn't talk about " needles " for quite a long time and instead referred to it as " her medicine " . We use the pen with a cover over the needle so she never saw the needle. Early on some people on this listserve gave me the wonderful idea to have Abby hold her favorite stuffed animal while we " gave Abby her medicine " . She continues to do that and holds one animal and sets another one to the side away from where she gets her medicine so she can watch it. Now she knows all about her medicine and the needle and probably did a lot sooner than we ever chose to tell her about it, but at least we made it through it. Abby always has to know what's going to happen in advance and be part of the planning process or things don't go well. She always picks the spot where she wants the shot and helps set up and put things away afterwards. I think making her part of the process has helped. Sherri D. Guest guest
, Not only did we have Max hold onto a stuffed animal, we used to let him choose which one would also get a shot. We gave him his and then let him use the empty syringe to inject his animal of choice. I think he liked being part of it that way. He chose the site on himself and then he got to do it to his animal. It made things much easier. Also, please don't think that you are hurting your child. I know it seems like it really, really hurts, but it does not. It does sting a bit, but there are ways to help that, too. You need to take the approach that this is medication that Laikyn needs and make the best of it. I don't want to sound harsh, but that is the reality of it. Try not to fret too much. Don't anticipate the worst. We will all help you through it. Just go get the instructions and we will help you take it from there. If I could, I would let you practice on Max. That's what Pat did when she had to learn for . Max let her give him her first try at a shot. She did very well and I think it helped her over the hump. When are you going to be arriving in NYC? If it is on Saturday, I would be more than happy to drive you to the walkathon on Sunday. I can tell you how to get here by train, bus or ferry and I can pick you up and drive you. Since Max gets his shots twice a day, I can arrange it for you to give Max a shot on that day. It will really help you get over your fear. And if Laikyn watches, it might help her, too. I am going to be in the city on that Saturday, the 22nd also. I'm meeting my mom and sister with my 2 kids. ( is going to the Outer Banks with his old frat brothers.) Maybe we can meet up then instead if you'd like. Just let me know. Jodi Z
Guest guest
Hi and Jodi R. started getting GH at age 4. I belive we are using 30 gage needles, but I would have to check from home and I am currently at work. First, we do not use the alcohol swabs as they can cause the shot to sting. Second, we do 's shot after he is sleeping. We give him the shot in his thighs, alternating every night. Just pull down his pajama pants and boom, it is done. Also, we fill the syringe and then let it sit for 20 minutes so it is closer to room temperature. That helps. We do not use any cream, but we do use a device that you put the syringe in. You then push the button and it shoots the syringe into the let much faster than you could. We did tell that he gets a shot every night after he is sleeping, but I am not sure he really understands. Guest guest
Hello, I too was very nervous to start but after seeing Dr. H at the convention we started. ( Dr. H said she does not have rss but needs gh)Our insurance company sent someone to our house to train us with na. She ran upstairs screamed yelled and we cried. That was before the shots came out of the package. After the nurse had us give ourselves the shot with saline as brianna watched she stopped crying and was very curious, she held her arm out, but we gave it to her in her belly because the nurse said it would be less painful. She now won't go to bed with out saying shot teeth and book. It has only been since July 28and some days are better than others. We use short needles 5/16 now we used 1/2 before but the needle was to long for her skin. I let her rub the alcohol swab on her skin for us to give her the shoot. I told her she needs it to stay healthy because when we told her it would help her grow she said she doesn't want to grow. I didn't want to use sick because that is when she needs her machine or is having severe reflux. It is so hard to explain to them so little. Good luck with your appointment. We have had almost one inch growth since July. She only grew one inch all of last year. Her muscles are stronger she is not falling as much( that could be her shoe lifts) but so far the once a week hide under the cofee table has been worth it. We go November to see to endo. if you need more info just e-mail. Guest guest
- I'm right there with you. I'm not at this point - but, will be eventually. All I can say is that you are doing the right thing. I totally understand your grief though - and it's okay to feel anxiety and grief with this - I can not bear to hurt my son either - but, I constantly remind myself - What would Ian want when he's 18 or 30? I just remember all the sweet faces at the convention during the round table discussion that if they had a choice - they still would all decide to have the GH no matter what. Keep us posted. Hugs to you. - H > Hi again everyone- > > We are going to see Dr H. on October 24 to start Laikyn on GH finally. > I am so nervous about giving her the shots.
