Guest guest
; My symptoms mostly include a noisy belly, then bad cramping and a bout 4 hours of frequent bathroom visits. I tend to react more to milk, sour cream, ice cream. Cheese doesn't bother me much. I've been drinking lactose free milks and they are good. I've also started drinking soy milk because it's good for us ladies that are going through menopause. It's no fat and high in calsium. Hope that helps. sandy --- Jansen wrote: > Tomorrow will mark my 2 weeks post op. My recovery > up > until a couple of days ago had been going very > smoothly. Guest guest
You can also avoid symptoms of lactose intolerance by taking a lactase tablet with your meal. It is available at your local pharmacy without a prescription. Guest guest
I learned on this list long before my DS that we may become lactose intolerant. So, after the operation I stayed with Lactaid and Soy milk for a while. I had no problem with hard cheese or yogurt. I couldn't handle cream cheese, it gave me the bloat and a lot of gas rumbling around (sometimes with a bit of pain) until everything finally came out the other end. LOL. At about 4 months I tried some regular milk and didn't have any problem. I think avoiding the milk from the beginning allowed everything to heal and get back to normal. It is a bit sweeter than regular milk however, with the lactose gone. In addition to the lactaid or Dairy Ease pills there are also drops that you can put into any milk, making it lactose free. I don't find that any less expensive than buying Lactaid milk tho. As you can tell, as a pre-op I'm lactose intolerant. Sheryl
Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for their input about lactose intolerance. I visited my PCP today and he's suggesting I wait a few days to get my stomach back in order and then to try yogurt. He says if I can tolerate the yogurt, the lactaid should work okay for me. I just want to thank everyone for their invaluable information. It really helped me to be a more informed patient and to know that I was heading down the right path. It's also reassuring to know that possibly 3-4 months post op I'll be able to tolerate milk again. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed! <S> Thanks, again! __________________________________________________

I found that it is cumulative, or volume-dependent. In other words, a few Tbsp of ice cream go down OK, but an 8-oz. glass of milk causes problems. Also, for a while I could have small amounts of milk every day, but after a week it caught up with me, and I had to go back to soy substitutes. Even 70% Lactaid milk gave me problems (gas!!), but 100% Lactaid milk seems to be relatively trouble-free. --Steve --
