Guest guest
My son sees Dr. Frick who has done a great job of correcting his left clubfoot using the Ponseti Method. After his tenotomy and removal of his last cast, Dr. Frick told me to put him in the brace for 12 hours. I was excited, but at the same time a little nervous about the 12 hour deal. I contacted Dr. Ponseti and he told me to do 18 hour if that would make me feel better. That is what I am doing, but it just seems odd to me that they both agree that he doees not need to wear them for 22 hours. Has anyone else had any experience wearing the shoes less that 22 hours right after tenotomy cast? I don't want to borrow trouble or anything, but I want to be sure he wears them as much as he needs to at his young age. I know it is easier now while he is 5 months than it will be later. If anyone has had any experiences with less than 22 hours in the brace, please let me know how it worked out. THANKS!
Guest guest
If this makes you nervous, just do the 23/7. We've all done that, and it's fine. An infant does not need time out of the brace and it sure will help him understand that he MUST wear it no matter what. Gradual reduction not only helps insure against relapse, it *trains* (hate that word, but it fits here) the child to accept bracing as their *normal* and you really, really, really want him to consider it his *normal*. It cannot hurt, and you won't be second guessing your decision should his foot relapse. Just imagine... you do the fewer hours and his foot starts turning in... now you get to feel like you *should* have done the 23/7 and if you had... your son wouldn't be dealing with relapse. Chances are this won't happen. But if it does.. at least you won't have to look back at this decision and think... " I may have done the wrong thing " . Relapses happen, yes. But if it does you'll know you did everything you possibly could to prevent it and this will ease loads of guilt you may otherwise lay on yourself. Peace of mind about our decisions sure makes parenting a lot easier.
