This issue has come up several times on this list because there are a few

webpages and a book or 2 which seem to want to make canola out to be the

worst thing since anthrax.

Actually, it is made from Canola seed, which, although is related to

rapeseed, is not the same. Canola was developed by Canadian scientists in

the 60's as an alternative oil seed. It was developed using selective

breeding and not genetic manipulation. You should know however that, many

varieties of canola have been genetically modified to be herbicide

resistant. While this may raise warning flags, most people don't realize

that the 2 most modified commodities around these days are soy and corn,

the 2 most widely used oil seeds in the US. FYI..canola is by far the most

widely used in Canada. My favorite quote is from the American Council on

Health " Canola oil is no less healthful than comparable products, including

corn, safflower, sesame, and sunflower oils. Implying that canola oil is in

essence rapeseed oil and therefore unwholesome is analogous to saying that

dogs are basically wolves and thus are dangerous as pets. "

The Canola Council of Canada has a web site with a lot of information

including a Truth/Rumor section which goes a very long way to answering

these questions. I'd recommend it for anyone thinking about using (or not

using) canola in your diet. It also has nutritional information and

comparisons with other oils.

Main Page: http://www.canola.org

Truth/Rumor: http://www.canola.org/production/thetruth.html (highly

recommended)

Of course it IS an industry sponsored site...but there are also links

to independent sources which back up the information on the web site.

There is also a good bit of information, including the full text of the

email which seems to have started all this at

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blcanola.htm (make sure you follow

the links at the bottom of this page to see the " debunking "

FYI...I've been using it for almost 30 years

Crisco makes a Canola Oil ... it should be right beside the vegetable

oil. I just happened to pick that up when I last bought oil (just

checked my cupboard to see that it was) as it has 0 trans fat and the

veggie oil didn't say that.

It seems like Canola oil is sold only in Canada and U.S. Am I

right?. In Sweden(my native country) it is sold as Rapsolja (rape

seed oil) and in Italy (where I live at the moment) I cannot find it

at all, it's just sunflower oil, peanut oil and olive oil. So we

bring a bottle from Sweden every time we go there.
