Guest guest
>>Do you think it would be warranted to ask for you labs to be drawn more often than annually after your first year? How many times a year? Is anyone as paranoid as I am about malabsorption of vitamins and calcium as I am? Do you feel getting a low result from an annual report could severly endager your health? Thanks for you help on this, Theresa Surgery date: DS Nov. 19, 2001>>> Dear Theresa, My 3 and 6 month labs have been fine. I will continue getting my labwork done every 3 months until I am one year post-op. After that, I will have my labs done every 6 months, or more often, if a problem is detected. A blood test is so simple that having it done more often is not a problem for me at all. Guest guest
Thanks for the feedback Jodi, I have found out that my insurance bills almost a thousand dollars for these labs! Wow! My current insurance plan through my employer covers weight loss surgery, so they will have to cover my labs. I am wondering if my company should change plans down the road, if your insurance can refuse to pay for these labs and since all my co morbidities will be gone, how we might convince the insurance to cover them! Anyway, I think it's never too soon to look down the road! Guest guest
Dear Theresa, It will not matter if your future insurance plan covers weight loss surgery or not. After a DS, we will always have a diagnosis of malabsorption. This diagnosis stands even if we have perfect health and no more co-morbitities. I spoke at length with my PCP of 14 yrs. about the frequency of my labs (I too was shocked to see my complete work-up cost over $1,000). He assured me that since I had this surgery, he can justify any test that he feels needs to be done so my " condition " can be closely monitored. My PCP felt that labs drawn every 6 months was reasonable (after the first year) if everything was checking out okay and I was feeling good. He suggests labs every 3 months if a problem or deficiency is detected or if you do not feel well.
